Football: Former England star Paul Gascoigne faces assault trial for kissing incident

LONDON (AFP) - Former England footballer Paul Gascoigne will stand trial for sexual assault in October after allegedly kissing a woman without consent on a train, a judge ruled on Tuesday (Jan 8).
The 51-year-old ex-Tottenham and Lazio player was arrested on a train between York and Newcastle in August.
He appeared at Teesside Crown Court in Middlesbrough in north-east England to formally enter a not guilty plea, the Press Association news agency reported.
His lawyer Michelle Heeley told the court that a number of character witnesses will give evidence "about his propensity to kiss people in a non-sexual manner".
Gascoigne, who has struggled with alcoholism since he retired from top-flight football, wore a blue suit and an open-neck shirt and spoke out during the hearing.
"I'm worried to bits. I'm scared," Gascoigne told judge Simon Bourne-Arton, who granted him unconditional bail.
When told he would have to turn up for the trial, Gascoigne said: "I cannot wait. I have done nothing wrong".
The trial on one charge of "sexual assault by touching" is set to be held on Oct 14.
Gascoigne - known as "Gazza" - made his name with Newcastle before going on to play for Tottenham, Italian giants Lazio and several other teams including Rangers.

The midfielder, widely regarded as one of the most talented players of his generation, was also a key member of the England side that reached the semi-finals of the 1990 World Cup in Italy. He won 57 caps in total.
Gascoigne was one of the first big-name footballers to arrive in China when he made the shock decision to be a player-coach of second division Gansu Tianma in 2003 but he lasted just a handful of games.
In an interview published on Tottenham's website last year, he said: "Sometimes when I look back and people say to me 'do you regret anything in your career'?
"Perhaps I left Spurs too early. I loved it there. The players, the staff, everyone was class and the team spirit was phenomenal, absolute class. We had a great team."

Football: Inter Milan, Juventus, Manchester United and Tottenham confirmed for ICC Singapore

SINGAPORE - English Premier League (EPL) giants Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, along with Italian Serie A's top clubs Juventus and Inter Milan have been announced on Wednesday morning (March 27) as the teams playing in the International Champions Cup (ICC) in Singapore in July.
The pre-season tournament for Europe's top football clubs will be played in Singapore's National Stadium.
The Red Devils will take on Inter on July 20 and a day later, the Old Lady of Turin will meet Spurs.
Legends from the clubs - Dwight Yorke (United), Francesco Toldo (Inter), Fabrizio Ravanelli (Juventus) and Teddy Sheringham (Tottenham) were present at the launch at the Incubator, near the Padang.
With no World Cup and European Championship played in the summer, the stage is set for a galaxy of stars to play in Singapore, apart from the South American players involved in the Copa America.
Sheringham said: "There is nothing like seeing the teams in the flesh. And with no distraction of other big tournaments (in Europe), hopefully all the big players will be on show for our Asian fans."
Yorke added: "We know that Asia is one of our biggest markets and, certainly, Singapore is very important. We want to feel connected to our fanbase and we are excited to come back (to Singapore) and to improve our brand as well."
United's visit will be particularly exciting to its large fanbase here. The club last played in Singapore in 2001, when a side that featured Roy Keane, David Beckham and even goalkeeper Fabien Barthez playing up front defeated a Singapore Selection side 8-1, with Lions striker Indra Sahdan scoring for the hosts.
Former Italian international striker Ravanelli took the opportunity to indulge in some banter with Inter, saying: "We are different from Inter because we (Juventus) are always at the top. We are constantly expanding tactically but we also want to improve our knowledge and understanding of this part of the world."
In 2017, when the ICC first came to Singapore, Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Inter Milan were the elite clubs that were invited.
Last year, Arsenal, Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain were the teams that battled it out at Kallang.

Football: Crystal Palace get crucial 1-0 win over Leicester City

LONDON (REUTERS) - Crystal Palace moved five points clear of the bottom three in the Premier League when Luka Milivojevic scored to give the south London club a 1-0 win over Leicester City on Saturday (Dec 15).
Roy Hodgson’s side had suffered a nightmare spell in the top flight, winning just one of their previous 11 Premier League games, but they broke the Wilfried Zaha curse by triumphing for the first time in 14 games without their influential forward.
Leicester had the ball in the Palace net after 27 minutes but Jamie Vardy’s effort was disallowed. The former England striker made the most of a poor touch from Crystal Palace goalkeeper Vicente Guaita on his Premier League debut and slotted the ball into the back of the net but he was adjudged to have fouled the keeper.
Leicester were made to pay as Milivojevic put Palace into the lead after 39 minutes with a stunning strike.
The Serbian midfielder picked up the ball 25 metres from goal and fired a powerful shot which flew past Kasper Schmeichel into the top left-hand corner.
Another Vardy shot was kept out after 79 minutes. Kelechi Iheanacho fed the ball into the path of the Leicester forward who, from a tight angle, looked to have equalised but his effort was pushed on to the inside of the post by Guaita and back into the arms of the Palace keeper.
Palace captain Milivojevic was pleased to see his side get back on winning form, saying: “It’s very big, a massive three points for us. I think we deserved it after everything. We’ve had many games where we scored but lost in the end and thankfully we broke that today.
“Winning at home is very important because, for the fans, from last season, we took many points here in our stadium and it’s very important to have taken that back for our team and our confidence.”
Manager Hodgson told the BBC: “In the first half I thought we were very good. We lost Cheikhou Kouyate in the second half and when he had come off it handed the ascendancy to Leicester. We then had to make certain we worked hard and ground out the victory.
“We did not concede that many chances and the one we did, that I thought they would score (from), we had a stroke of fortune.”
Leicester manager Claude Puel said his side were inconsistent. “I think we did not start the game with the right intensity. We played a poor first half, it was not enough,” he told the BBC.
“We came back in the second half with a good intensity and quality. We had three or four chances to come back into the game. I think we deserved to come back but it is a big disappointment because we need the points.
“We were unlucky at the end but we lost three points. It is important to correct this and to play a consistent game from the start until the end.”

LONDON (AFP) - Manchester United revealed on Thursday (Feb 14) that sacking Jose Mourinho cost the club nearly £20 million (S$34.8 million), with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward hailing the impact of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The sum of £19.6 million which is listed under "exceptional items" in the club's second-quarter results, includes payouts for the members of Mourinho's staff who left with him after he was sacked in December.
The fortunes of the Premier League club have been transformed since Solskjaer took the helm as interim boss.
United are now in the top four after being 11 points adrift of the Champions League places when Mourinho left.
"The appointment of Ole and Mike (Phelan) as caretaker manager and assistant manager has had a positive impact throughout the club," said Woodward.
"We are delighted with the improvement in the team's performances since December and we look forward to a strong finish to the 18-19 season."
In the report, the club announced record revenues of £208.6 million for the quarter, which translate into earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation of £104.3 million and an operating profit of £44 million.

Real Madrid last month knocked Manchester United off the top of Deloitte's Football Money League after two years at the top for the Premier League club.
Meanwhile, Eric Harrison, the former youth team coach of United's 'Class of 92', which included David Beckham and Ryan Giggs, has died aged 81, the club announced on Thursday.
Harrison, who helped forge the fledgling careers of Beckham, Giggs, Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes and Gary and Phil Neville, was diagnosed with dementia four years ago.

Rampant Bernardo Silva is undroppable: Pep Guardiola

Rampant Bernardo Silva is undroppable: Pep Guardiola

LONDON • With an FA Cup semi-final tie against Brighton just three days later, Pep Guardiola must decide how best to shuffle his star-studded Manchester City line-up as they host struggling Cardiff in the Premier League today.
But, despite the embarrassment of riches City possess, one player has remained an almost automatic selection.
Bernardo Silva has appeared in 30 of their 31 league games - starting in 26 - with only goalkeeper Ederson turning out more times for the first XI.
While City forward Raheem Sterling and Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk appear to be the front runners to scoop the Player of the Year honours this season, the Portugal midfielder has also made a compelling case to be considered.
Guardiola believes that the form of Silva, who has been a model of consistency all season, "is a consequence of the way he accepts his role".
The Spaniard added: "He works so hard and the rewards are there. Right now, with the way he plays, I cannot do anything else but put him on the pitch and let him play.
"He's so important for us. What he's done for us is the best."

ROLE MODEL
He works so hard and the rewards are there. Right now, with the way he plays, I cannot do anything else but put him on the pitch and let him play.
PEP GUARDIOLA, Manchester City manager, on the impressive contributions Bernardo Silva has made to the team.

ALL FOR ONE
It's most important for the team to keep winning. If it's me scoring or Kun (Sergio Aguero) or Raz (Sterling) or Leroy (Sane) or Riyad (Mahrez), it doesn't really matter.
BERNARDO SILVA, City midfielder, on playing as a team.

Despite having already equalled his personal best of six league goals with seven matches to play, the 24-year-old Silva is not gunning for individual records as "what matters is three points".
Ahead of the game against the Bluebirds, he said: "It's most important for the team to keep winning. If it's me scoring or Kun (Sergio Aguero) or Raz (Sterling) or Leroy (Sane) or Riyad (Mahrez), it doesn't really matter."
However, his manager will certainly need him to be at his creative best after Aguero, the league's top scorer on 19 goals, was ruled out of the meeting with Neil Warnock's men.
Admitting that he "will (have to) see the evolution of the next few days" to determine if the Argentina striker will be fit to travel to Wembley to take on the Seagulls, Guardiola said at his pre-match press conference yesterday: "He didn't train last two days, he is not able to play.
"Aguero and Fabian Delph (are the only ones who are injured). The others are quite well."
The 48-year-old also urged his players to keep their eyes on the remaining prizes, with City still on track for an unprecedented quadruple, although "beating Cardiff is our main target".
He added: "No one said it would be easy. We know it. Everyone is excited about the next weeks, but we also know we can lose everything. It's not complicated. It's amazing to have this opportunity, to be there.
"I saw how good Arsenal are playing (against Newcastle). We have an incredible distance (from them) because we have done so well.
"Then we go to Wembley and we want to win a trophy I have never won, the oldest one."

Treat women better, Salah urges Muslim world

Treat women better, Salah urges Muslim world
LOS ANGELES • Egyptian football star Mohamed Salah has called for change in the way women are treated in the Muslim world in an interview with Time magazine published on Wednesday.
The Liverpool forward was named one of the US magazine's 100 most influential figures of the year, alongside other athletes including Tiger Woods, LeBron James and Naomi Osaka.
Salah, 26, told Time that while his attitude towards gender equality had evolved over the years, he wanted to see more change.
"I think we need to change the way we treat women in our culture," he was quoted as saying. "It's not optional."
He said the treatment of women "in my culture and in the Middle East" had changed his opinions on gender issues.
"I support the woman more than I did before, because I feel like she deserves more than what they give her at the moment," he added.
Salah is an icon in Egypt after helping the country qualify for the 2018 World Cup, the first time they had reached the Finals of the event since 1990.
He was named African Footballer of the Year in 2017 and last year and was also English football's Player of the Year last year following a dazzling season with Liverpool.
He told Time he has learnt to cope with the "little bit of pressure" that comes with his elevated profile, while expressing pride at being regarded as a role model.
"To be the first Egyptian in (this) situation and no one has done this before... It's something different," he said, insisting that superstardom had not changed his lifestyle.
"I just live my life normal," he said. "Most of the time I stay at home, I don't like to go out."

Football: Delighted Klopp tells players to stay focused

LONDON (AFP) - Jurgen Klopp refused to get carried away with the growing expectation that Liverpool can lift the league title for the first time in 29 years saying his players must stay focussed after they thrashed Arsenal 5-1 on Saturday (Dec 29).
Roberto Firmino's hat-trick - the first by a Liverpool player against the Gunners since Peter Crouch in 2007 - as well as a goal apiece by Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane ensured Liverpool's front three all scored in the same league game for the first time this season.
It gives Liverpool a nine point advantage over Tottenham Hotspur who surprisingly slipped up 3-1 at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers and 10 over champions Manchester City, who play Southampton on Sunday.
Klopp, though, kept his feet firmly on the ground especially with a potentially title-defining clash away at Manchester City on Thursday.
"All over it was a good performance against a good opponent and our reaction (to going behind to an early goal) was just brilliant," he told BT Sport.
Klopp said Tottenham's loss had not affected his players at all.
"For sure, Tottenham's result people out there reacted, but not inside the dressing room where they were completely concentrated on the match and not allowed to have that influence our game.
"That is how I want the team to stay which is to be concentrated nothing else."

Liverpool's outstanding central defender Virgil van Dijk, who has added the solidity to a defence which was once a real weakness in the side, said they were not the finished article yet but it was a good moment to be a member of the Liverpool squad.
"We still need to improve a lot of things but we are very happy with where we are at the moment we have to keep intensity high and continue in this way," the 27-year-old told BT Sport.
"Anything is possible. We are in a good way, it's tough but it's a great time to be a Liverpool player."
Van Dijk's fellow defender Scottish international full-back Andy Robertson said the City game had been on their minds but they had so far done the business without letting it distract them.
"(Manchester City) is a huge one," the 24-year-old told BT Sports.

Football: Maradona out of hospital after internal bleeding scare, agreed earlier to stay in Mexico for another season

Football: Maradona out of hospital after internal bleeding scare, agreed earlier to stay in Mexico for another season

BUENOS AIRES (REUTERS) - Argentinian football legend Diego Maradona was discharged from hospital, after being admitted earlier on Friday (Jan 4) with internal bleeding in the stomach which was discovered during routine examinations, his daughter Dalma said.
"For those who were really worried about my dad I can tell you that he is well," she wrote on Twitter after fears over her father's health spread. "He is going home soon."
The 58-year-old was having a routine medical check-up in his homeland before returning to Mexico, where he is coach of second division side Dorados de Sinaloa, when doctors discovered the problem.
However, a source close to the family told Reuters the problem was not serious and that the former Boca Juniors, Napoli and Barcelona midfielder, who famously led his country to the 1986 World Cup title, was not in any danger.
Another source said that Maradona, who left the hospital without talking to the media, may have to undergo more tests.
Friday's scare was the latest for Maradona, who has suffered frequent periods in hospital over the years, often owing to the extravagant lifestyle that helped make him one of the most admired and iconic footballers of the 20th century.
He last fell ill at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where he was filmed passing out in an executive box at the Argentina-Nigeria group-stage game. Argentina won 2-1 to reach the last 16, where they were knocked out by eventual winners France.
Maradona was taken into hospital in 2004 with severe heart and respiratory problems linked to cocaine use. He later underwent drug rehabilitation in Cuba and Argentina before a stomach-stapling operation in 2005 helped him lose weight.
In 2007 he checked himself into a clinic in Buenos Aires to help him overcome alcohol abuse problems.
In recent months, he has walked with the aid of crutches because of problems with his knees.
The unexpected news of Maradona's admission to hospital on Friday came just hours after his lawyer confirmed that he would coach in Mexico for a second consecutive season.
He took over at struggling Dorados de Sinaloa in September and got them into the play-offs where they lost to Atletico San Luis.
"Diego Maradona has arranged to continue with Dorados de Sinaloa and will stay as coach of the team for the whole season," his agent Matias Morla wrote on Twitter.
The club said his assistant Jose Maria Martinez would lead the team until Maradona returned.

Football: Benzema double helps Madrid win hectic game at Valladolid

VALLADOLID (REUTERS) - Real Madrid ended a three-game losing streak by winning 4-1 at Real Valladolid in a chaotic game on Sunday (March 10) in which the hosts had two goals ruled out, missed a penalty and hit the woodwork while the visitors had Casemiro sent off late on.
Karim Benzema scored twice after the interval with a penalty and a header from a corner to give Santiago Solari's side a 3-1 lead, after Raphael Varane struck in the 34th minute to cancel out Anuar Tuhami's goal for Valladolid five minutes earlier.
Ballon d'Or winner Luka Modric then showed his class to stretch Madrid's lead in the 85th after Casemiro was dismissed for earning two bookings.
Modric's goal completed a highly entertaining and eventful match at the Jose Zorilla stadium, which experienced a power cut before kick off, although the game began on schedule.
The victory is unlikely to extend Argentine Solari's stay as coach, with reports in the Spanish media predicting he will be sacked on Monday having only taken the reins in mid-November.
Madrid had endured one of their worst ever weeks before the game, exiting the Champions League in the last 16 with a 4-1 home defeat by Ajax Amsterdam after sustaining successive losses to Barcelona which ended their hopes of winning any silverware.
Sunday's win took Madrid to 49 points and they are 12 adrift of leaders Barca and five behind second-placed Atletico Madrid.

MISSING PLAYERS

Solari's first game in charge of Real in La Liga was against Valladolid back in November and on that occasion his side also rode their luck, winning 2-0 with goals in the final 10 minutes after the visitors had hit the woodwork twice.
Real had a total of six players unavailable for this game including Gareth Bale, Vinicius Jr, Lucas Vazquez, Dani Carvajal and captain Sergio Ramos, but Solari still left Spain international Isco out of his matchday squad.
Valladolid made a determined start and were awarded a penalty when Oscar Plano's shirt was tugged by Alvaro Odriozola, but Ruben Alcaraz blazed over the bar from the spot - the fifth penalty in a row his side have squandered this season.
Valladolid forward Sergi Guardiola then had two efforts ruled out for offside in the space of two minutes after Video Assistant Referee (VAR) reviews.
However, the striker played a big part in Valladolid finally taking the lead, sliding to meet a cross at the far post and rolling the ball towards Anuar who tapped in from close range.
Madrid levelled thanks to some sloppy goalkeeping from Valladolid's former Barcelona goalkeeper Jordi Masip, who lost an aerial contest with Nacho, and Varane calmly knocked the loose ball over the line into the net with his studs.
The goal killed Valladolid's momentum and while Madrid did not sparkle in the second half, their superior quality shone through with Benzema's double and Modric's classy finish.

Real Madrid They say you should never go back. However, Mourinho has shown in the past that such an adage is one he has no time for, demonstrated by his return to Chelsea for a second stint after departing Real Madrid in May 2013.

Football: Girona knock Atletico out of Copa del Rey in six-goal thriller

MADRID (REUTERS) - Atletico Madrid crashed out of the Copa del Rey to Girona on Wednesday (Jan 16) following a highly entertaining 3-3 draw at home to the Catalan side, who sneaked through to the quarter-finals on away goals after the tie finished 4-4 on aggregate.
Atletico substitute Antoine Griezmann looked to have completed a late turnaround for Diego Simeone's side, who were trailing 2-1 in the second half, when he put the hosts 3-2 up in the 84th minute.
Yet Girona forward Seydou Doumbia delivered a final twist in the saga by scoring at the other end four minutes later.
Croatian forward Nikola Kalinic had fired Atletico into an early lead but the packed Wanda Metropolitano stadium was stunned into silence by a jaw-dropping volley from Girona winger Valery Fernandez in the 36th minute.
Atletico, already missing several first-team regulars to injury, lost Spain midfielder Saul Niguez to a muscle problem early in the second half.
They suffered another setback soon after when Cristhian Stuani headed Girona in front following a free kick, sparking furious but futile protests from Atletico who claimed the Uruguayan had fouled their captain Diego Godin.
Griezmann came off the bench on the hour mark and soon threaded a pass towards Kalinic which Argentine winger Angel Correa squeezed under Girona's goalkeeper to equalise.
Godin then hit the crossbar and Santiago Arias had a goal ruled out for offside as Atletico chased a winner.
France forward Griezmann prompted wild celebrations when he smashed into the roof of the net, but the mood was soon punctured by Doumbia, also a substitute, who poked home a shot from Borja Garcia to send Girona through and dump out Atletico, who have not won the Copa del Rey since 2013.

Football: Real Madrid agree fee for Chelsea's Hazard, say reports

LONDON (REUTERS) - Chelsea forward Eden Hazard is set to join Real Madrid after a deal worth €100 million (S$150 million) plus add-ons was agreed between the two clubs on Thursday, British and Spanish media reported.
There was no official word from Madrid or London.
Spain's AS sports daily, citing unnamed sources, said on its website that the Premier League side had accepted Real's offer for the 28-year-old.
It said Hazard, who is training with Belgium ahead of a weekend Euro 2020 qualifier against Kazakhstan, had been informed and the deal could be announced later.
Sky Sports television said Chelsea had wanted in the region of £130 million (S$225 million), a fee that could ultimately be reached through performance-related clauses.
Hazard, who was set to become a free agent in June 2020, guided Chelsea to the Europa League title in Baku last month with two goals in a 4-1 win over London rivals Arsenal.
"My dream was to play in the Premier League and I did it for seven years. I think it's a goodbye," he said after that game.
He joined Chelsea from Lille in 2012 for £32 million and won the Europa League in his first season.
He later won the Premier League title in 2015 and 2017 as well as one League Cup and FA Cup.
He scored 16 goals and created another 15 in the Premier League last season as Chelsea finished third in the table.

Gwinn gets Germany's vital goal

Gwinn gets Germany's vital goal

PARIS • Midfielder Giulia Gwinn scored the only goal yesterday as Germany opened their Women's World Cup campaign with a 1-0 win over China in Group B.
On a sunny but breezy early summer's day perfect for football, in front of a noisy crowd of 15,283 in Rennes, Germany - twice winners of this competition - dominated possession and territory.
Yet, in a game of slick passing mixed with robust challenges, they twice survived narrow escapes.
The 19-year-old Gwinn fired in from the edge of the box in the 66th minute to break stiff Chinese resistance and seal the victory.
But China had almost stunned the favourites against the run of play in the first half when Yang Li was sent through after a German error, but her shot was cleared when she looked certain to score.
Carolin Simon hit the woodwork with a cross minutes later, but Germany's early dominance faded as the Chinese gained in confidence.
China then earned another golden chance from a quick break, hitting the post in the 44th minute before Germany goalkeeper Almuth Schult came to the rescue.
With the win, Germany are now unbeaten in their last 13 matches, the longest run of any team taking part in the tournament in France.
"That was hard work. We started well but the goal didn't come. We were more stable after the break and we got the reward for our efforts in the end," said Germany coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg.
In Friday's opener, France coach Corinne Diacre said her side had taken their first step towards Cup success but warned they must stay grounded after they started with a 4-0 victory over South Korea.
Les Bleues were rarely troubled by a limited side and took only nine minutes for forward Eugenie Le Sommer to fire the ball into the roof of the net from close range.
Wendie Renard doubled the tally with a downward header in the 35th minute, and the towering defender added another with her head on the stroke of half-time.
France's intensity dropped after the break until five minutes from the final whistle, when captain Amandine Henry curled a superb shot into the far corner.
"We worked a lot, they suffered a lot during the preparation period. We won tonight but it's just the first step," Diacre told a news conference at the Parc des Princes.
"We need six more (steps) to reach our goal, we must keep our feet on the ground, keep working.
"We started well and we made it easy for ourselves. It was important to score a second goal before the break, and we did even better."

Trust in players crucial: Nazri

Trust in players crucial: Nazri

There is no secret in motivating footballers.
Just one simple word - trust - captures Nazri Nasir's management philosophy. This is what he tried to instil during his short stint in charge of Singapore during March's AirMarine Cup in Malaysia.
The former national football captain said: "I fully believe in them.
"I told them when you're selected to be part of this team, it's because I trust you.
"When they're called on in the game, even if it's just five minutes, I trust that they will give their 100 per cent and, when they're given a chance, they will do well."
The Lions, their morale low after failing to qualify for the semi-finals of last November's AFF Suzuki Cup for the third time running, responded with some creditable performances at the friendly quadrangular tournament.
In Kuala Lumpur, they beat the hosts 1-0 and held Oman to a 1-1 draw before losing 5-4 on penalties.
Nazri, 48, who was recently appointed assistant to new national coach Tatsuma Yoshida, said: "They responded to me very well and I always try to win the players' trust, that's the most important thing and it showed during the AirMarine Cup.

MUCH TO LEARN
His (Nazri's) role will be very crucial as the middleman between players and coaches. He also has a lot of experience to impart and, with Yoshida's time in Japan with various clubs, we need to adapt as fast as we can.
HARISS HARUN, Singapore captain, on the partnership of new Lions coach Tatsuma Yoshida and assistant Nazri Nasir.

"I hope they can continue the momentum and that's where I come in also to motivate the players.
"It was a good experience to get to know the players better. Now, I can help him (Yoshida) get to know them as well by sharing their mentality, strengths and weaknesses.
"With his coaching ideas and me, as I can interact with players easily and understand them better, these will blend together to build a good chemistry in the team."
He and Yoshida face their first test as a partnership in the coming days. The Republic, ranked 160th, face the Solomon Islands (world No. 139) and Myanmar (140) on Saturday and next Tuesday.
The friendlies at the National Stadium were arranged to help Singapore gain crucial Fifa ranking points for a potentially better draw in July for the World Cup qualifiers.
Singapore captain Hariss Harun said Nazri, who skippered the Lions to victory at the 1998 AFF Championship, is an important presence in the national set-up.
Hariss noted: "His role will be very crucial as the middleman between players and coaches.
"He also has a lot of experience to impart and, with Yoshida's time in Japan with various clubs (Kashiwa Reysol, Albirex Niigata and Ventforet Kofu), we need to adapt as fast as we can.
"Our results at the AirMarine Cup gave us a lot of confidence so we just have to try to continue that momentum. We have a new coach too so the boys are eager to show what we have.
"I hope this will translate to a good performance in the coming games."
After Nazri retired in 2008, he joined his former club Tampines Rovers as general manager and was later an assistant coach for the now-defunct LionsXII and Young Lions.
He said: "Yoshida brings different ideas and playing styles.
"He's very detailed and requires high intensity.
"He wants to bring Singapore to a higher level. With his guidance and my local experience, I'm sure we can help the team improve. "

The synergy in my partnership with Fandi will be of utmost importance as the Under-22 team is critical to the long-term objectives of the national team."

Rodgers closing in on EPL return with Leicester

LONDON • Brendan Rodgers will soon make his return to managing in the Premier League, as Celtic "very reluctantly" granted him permission to talk to Leicester City.
The 46-year-old Northern Irishman, who has not coached a Premier League team since being sacked by Liverpool in October 2015, is in talks about filling the vacancy left by Claude Puel, who was sacked last Sunday.
Rodgers, who came agonisingly close to landing an elusive Premier League title for Liverpool in the 2013-14 season, has rebuilt his reputation in Scotland, guiding Celtic to a historic double treble in two seasons and are on course for a third one this term.
However, not even the lure of that - and getting the better of Rangers manager Steven Gerrard who played under him at Liverpool - has been enough to deter him from meeting the Leicester hierarchy.
"Celtic Football Club today confirmed that it has been approached by Leicester City to speak to Brendan Rodgers with regard to their current managerial vacancy," read a Celtic statement.
"Brendan has indicated to the club that this is an opportunity he wishes to investigate further and therefore, very reluctantly, the club has granted him permission to speak to Leicester."
Prior to Liverpool, Rodgers was in charge at Swansea, where he introduced a brand of possession-based play inspired by his interest in Spanish football.
Since arriving at Parkhead in 2016, Rodgers has won two league titles, three Scottish League Cups and two Scottish Cups.

  • Scottish Premier League titles Brendan Rodgers won with Celtic.

Celtic are currently eight points clear of local rivals Rangers in the Scottish Premiership as they chase an eighth consecutive top-division title.
Puel was dismissed after 16 months in charge following Saturday's 4-1 defeat by Crystal Palace.
The 57-year-old Frenchman left the club 12th in the Premier League, having lost five of their past six league games and just eight points above the relegation zone.
First-team coaches Mike Stowell and Adam Sadler were put in temporary charge for their league match at home to Brighton yesterday.

Rodgers should lift spirits at Leicester. On paper, this looks like a good move all around, apart from maybe for Celtic. Rodgers and Leicester seem like a good fit. The Foxes have a good squad of talented players, who should be doing much better than they are in the Premier League.

Bayern Munich great and 1990 World Cup winner Klaus Augenthaler roamed the Jurong East Stadium pitch yesterday morning, scouring for talent at the FC Bayern Youth Cup Singapore finals.
It took the 61-year-old German just 10 minutes to be convinced of Nur Muhammad Asis Ijilrali's ability.
The Meridian Secondary School student was one of 16 players shortlisted by Augenthaler and Sebastian Dremmler, head coach of Bayern's international programme, to represent Singapore at the Bayern Youth Cup World Finals in Munich in May.
A final team of 10 will make the trip for the seven-a-side, Under-16 competition which will feature eight teams from seven countries.
Augenthaler said the standard of football he witnessed was a "positive surprise".
When asked if Singapore's youth players are at a disadvantage against Europeans because of their smaller build, the former defender, who played 404 Bundesliga matches and won seven league titles with Bayern, disagreed.
"It's not about the physique," said the 1.82m Augenthaler, who played 27 times for the former West Germany from 1983 to 1990.

SIZE DOESN'T MATTER
In football, you need a lot of skill, you need to be smart, you need to be quick.
KLAUS AUGENTHALER, Bayern Munich great, on the requirements of a good player.

"The first guy (Asis) we selected, after 10 minutes? He was the smallest one we picked in the end.
"In football, you need a lot of skill, you need to be smart, you need to be quick.
"When we won the World Cup (in 1990), we had three or four small players like Pierre Littbarski (1.68m) and Thomas Hassler (1.66m)."
The 1.55m, 41kg Asis is thrilled at being shortlisted for the trip to Germany. The 15-year-old had made the news in April 2016 when Turkish giants Galatasaray and Dutch side Feyenoord Rotterdam expressed an interest to invite him to train with them after watching videos of him.
And even though he has played in minor tournaments in Holland and Portugal for the private academy he was a part of then, a move to a club in Europe never materialised, partly owing to the fact he was underage and is not from the European Union.
"I'm very excited to get the chance to challenge myself in Europe again," said Asis, who is now part of the ActiveSG football academy. "I did not expect to get selected today because there were older boys and I think I did not play to my best.
"But I want to keep improving and play better, and work hard to achieve my goal, which is still to play overseas."
National sports agency Sport Singapore (SportSG) also announced a three-year partnership with record 28-time German champions Bayern yesterday.
The tie-up will see both parties join efforts to continue to organise the FC Bayern Youth Cup - into its third edition this year - as well as participate in coach exchanges and overseas education programmes.
Bayern executive board member Joerg Wacker said the club experienced Singaporeans' passion for football when their first team featured in the pre-season International Champions Cup tournament in July 2017.
"In the past two years, we feel that we share the same vision for football and we are proud to extend our work with SportSG," he said.
"Bayern is committed to contribute extensively and positively to the youth football development in Singapore for many years."
Added SportSG chief executive officer Lim Teck Yin: "We are very happy to have a famous global brand in football as a long-term partner to enrich our existing programmes.
"There is a lot to learn from them with their longstanding record of producing well-rounded players."

Lions line up 2 friendlies, to get new coach Yoshida soon

After a seven-month wait, the Lions will play at the National Stadium again, and also welcome a new ringmaster.
The Straits Times understands that the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) will unveil Tatsuma Yoshida as the new national coach this week, after announcing yesterday two international friendlies against Solomon Islands on June 8 and Myanmar on June 11.
The national football coach position has been vacant since Fandi Ahmad's interim stint ended following Singapore's group-stage elimination at the AFF Suzuki Cup last November.
The Lions last played at the Sports Hub in a 6-1 group-stage win over Timor-Leste in that tournament. Former international Nazri Nasir led the team as caretaker in their international friendlies in March.
FAS general secretary Yazeen Buhari said: "The upcoming international window is a vital period for the national team to gather for centralised training and friendly matches, especially for the overseas players.
"The two friendlies will help the team build momentum from the positive performances in the last international window. In addition, these matches will also aid the team in their preparations for the 2022 World Cup qualifiers which will be played later this year."
The Lions acquitted themselves well in their last two friendlies at the Airmarine Cup in Malaysia, where they beat the hosts 1-0 and held Oman to a 1-1 draw before a penalty shoot-out defeat in March.
Yazeen added: "We made a deliberate attempt to schedule the June matches at the Home of the Lions in order for our fans to be able to support and rally the Lions at our very own National Stadium.
"We are also thankful to have the support of our venue partner, the Singapore Sports Hub, who made it possible for the friendlies to be played at the Home of the Lions."
While world No. 139 Solomon Islands and Myanmar (140th) are hardly glamour teams, they represent decent opponents Singapore (160th) have a realistic chance to get a positive result against.
A win or a draw would add Fifa ranking points as the Lions bid to squeeze into the top 32 Asian teams - they are currently 33rd - and move up from the fifth pot into the fourth pot, for a potentially better draw in July for the World Cup qualifiers.
National skipper Hariss Harun said: "The new coach will have his own ideas and the faster the players can adapt, the better it will be for the national team, and we are looking forward to working with him."
In February, ST had revealed Yoshida as the front runner for the national coach position. The Chiba native was a central midfielder and started his playing career with hometown club Kashiwa Reysol before turning out for Kyoto Sanga and Montedio Yamagata.
In 2002, he signed for Jurong FC and played under former Singapore coach V. Sundram Moorthy, then player-coach for the Cobras.
After hanging up his boots that year, Yoshida returned to Reysol, where he rose through the ranks from youth-team coach to technical director and then head coach.
Although he lasted just one season each as head coach of Reysol (2015) and Albirex Niigata (2016), and was also sacked by Ventforet Kofu last year, it was his youth development work that impressed the FAS as he helped produce some Japan internationals such as Marseille right-back Hiroki Sakai.

SINGAPORE — New Singapore national football coach Tatsuma Yoshida got off to a winning start in his first match in charge, yet the Lions' 4-3 friendly win over the Solomon Islands on Saturday (8 June) clearly showed that they need plenty of improvement before they can challenge for honours.
