Football: Salah now in Emery's top five after PSG snub

LONDON (AFP) - Arsenal manager Unai Emery believes Mohamed Salah is now among the world's top five players, despite failing to sign him when he was in charge of Paris Saint-Germain.
The Gunners boss will be in opposition to the Liverpool forward when his Arsenal side face the unbeaten Premier League leaders at Anfield on Saturday.
Egypt international Salah, 26, has scored 59 goals in 78 matches since arriving at Anfield from Italian club Roma before the start of the 2017/18 season.
Emery was coach of Ligue 1 champions PSG at the time and on Friday (Dec 28) he admitted to being uncertain as to how Salah would cope with the pressure of playing for a major club.
"We spoke about the possibility to sign Salah to Paris St Germain when he was playing at Roma," Emery said.
"We had some doubts - and then he signed for Liverpool and these doubts he has broken at Liverpool. Now, if you are speaking about the five top players in the world, one is Salah."
Emery, asked about the nature of his reservations regarding Salah, added: "Can he take the performance into one big team?
"For example like PSG in Paris. And today I can say to you...if we signed him, we signed one player in the top five in the world."
Emery said the signings of Salah and centre-back Virgil van Dijk had been central to Liverpool's progress under Jurgen Klopp.
"I remember three years ago they had a problem in their defensive moments and bought some people - for example van Dijk - with a good investment and the result is we are looking at them today and their progress," he said.
"They are very strong in defence and also they are improving a lot when they bought Salah and now offensively they are a very big team."
The Spaniard added: "I think the Premier League is now the best and most important competition in the world for the teams, with Spain, maybe Italy and Germany.
"But I think here are the best teams and players and now the leader in the table is Liverpool - and it is because they are doing things very well."

Football: Morata injury could make Sarri enter January sales

LONDON (AFP) - Chelsea coach Maurizio Sarri is likely to assess the attacking talent on offer in the January transfer window after Alvaro Morata suffered an injury this week.
The Spanish striker was forced out of the Europa League draw at Hungarian club Vidi just before half-time after injuring his knee while shooting and will almost certainly miss Chelsea's Premier League trip to Brighton on Sunday (Dec 16).
His misfortune allowed Olivier Giroud to enter the action and the France international responded with a superb late free-kick that secured a 2-2 draw and ensured Chelsea remained unbeaten throughout the group stage as they progressed to the last 32.
Sarri must now decide whether Giroud should start at the Amex Stadium or whether he again employs Eden Hazard in a central role as part of a less physical, more mobile forward line.
Given his frequent tactical changes so far, the Italian does not appear fully convinced that either approach is ideal.
Neither Morata nor Giroud have fully impressed this season. Morata has outscored his rival for the centre-forward role with five Premier League goals to Giroud's one but has again proved inconsistent, mirroring last season's form when he was bought as a replacement for Diego Costa.

BIDING HIS TIME

Giroud told the Guardian this week he had no problem with biding his time at Chelsea because the prospect of winning a Premier League title kept him motivated.
"Alvaro (had) a great pre-season, so it was normal not to take him off the team even to put in a world champion. Let's be patient, work in training and come back stronger," he told the paper.
"I prefer to be at a big club rather than playing every week in a less prestigious team and I still have targets.
"To win a Premier League is my last dream as a footballer, maybe more than winning a Champions League, because I know how tough it is to win this league.
"I have team mates here who have won it, so I'm a bit jealous."
Former Real Madrid striker Alvaro made a promising start to his Chelsea career, scoring freely and demonstrating his strength in the air.
Recurring injuries and difficulty adapting to the physical demands of the Premier League have taken their toll, however, and Morata has rarely looked entirely comfortable since.
The man bought for Â£60 million (S$100 million) has never achieved the popularity at Stamford Bridge enjoyed by the abrasive Costa, whose willingness to confront defenders made him a supporters' favourite before his relationship with Sarri's predecessor Antonio Conte turned sour.
Reports this week that Barcelona could make Morata a target in January suggest he could leave sooner rather than later.
However, Sarri could not allow Morata to go without lining up a replacement - furthermore, Morata's injury this week has highlighted the risk of relying on just two principal strikers.
Giroud has given good service since he arrived from Arsenal last January but his return of four goals from 26 league appearances, 15 of those as a substitute, is not prolific.
His role for Chelsea mirrors that for France - he has an ability to bring team-mates into play in and around the opposition penalty area. To this effect, he has proved an encouraging presence for Hazard who has made it clear he prefers to operate coming in from wide areas.
Hazard's relationship with Conte suffered when the Italian used him in a more central role and having been again asked to switch, the goals have dried up for the Belgian.
He scored eight goals in the opening ten games but has now failed to find the net in eight games.
Chelsea's hopes of winning the title rest on Sarri getting the Belgian scoring again and finding a more consistent central striker - and the solution to both problems is likely to be found in the January transfer market.

LONDON â€¢ While Manchester City are back on top of the Premier League - at least until Saturday - manager Pep Guardiola is not expecting anything like a repeat of last season's procession to the title.
After a 2-0 win at Everton on Wednesday, courtesy of strikes from Aymeric Laporte and Gabriel Jesus, City are ahead of Liverpool on goal difference.
Last term, City won the title by 19 points and such was their lead during the latter stages that it was a case of when, not if, they would be crowned champions.
Yet with Jurgen Klopp's challengers having a game in hand and Tottenham just five points behind the front runners, Guardiola knows that their return to the pinnacle of English football's top flight for the first time since Dec 8 means little in the grand scheme of things.
The City manager told reporters: "We are leaders, but 12 games to play, a lot of games.
"We are going to drop points, hopefully less than the other teams. I don't think any team will win all 12 games.

There will, however, be little respite for City with the games coming in thick and fast.
After this weekend, the champions have to play four more times before the end of this month, including the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie at Schalke, and Guardiola admitted the fixture congestion "demands a lot of stress".
But, for now, the 48-year-old is just delighted with the way City regained the initiative in the title race despite their damaging loss at Newcastle last week.
He said: "We have a game every three days for three months. I don't know how far we will get, maybe we will die on the road, but we are trying. We have an incredible test on Sunday against Chelsea."

The Spaniard also cranked up the pressure on the Reds by indulging in mind games and suggested that cross-town rivals Manchester United were capable of doing them a favour.
He added: "Liverpool have to go to Old Trafford (on Feb 24)."
That Sunday, City will be at Wembley to face the Blues in the League Cup final. The Cup holders remain the only English team capable of securing an unprecedented quadruple this season.

All five of Liverpool's goals at Anfield in midweek came from assists by full-backs Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson.
Klopp revealed that Alexander-Arnold had taken the match ball home with him - a tradition normally reserved from the scorer of hat-tricks - after his three assists.
"That game was exceptional. I don't think I was ever part of a game that somebody had a hat-trick of assists," added the German coach.
And Klopp acknowledged how important the young full-back pairing is, not only to Liverpool's improved defensive record this season, but as a potent creative weapon going forward.
"It's important. That's modern football. If you ask a young boy his favourite position, I don't think a lot of boys would say 'I want to be a full-back'. But football changed, they became much more important," he added.
"I was a full-back myself for a decent part of my career. It didn't look completely different to what the boys are doing but I know there are a lot of things to do.
"You have to be really strong defensively but on the other hand, because a lot of teams clear the wing for the full-backs offensively, if you are then able to be open-minded enough and have the football quality to see some people in the same shirt in the box, that helps a lot."

LONDON (AFP) - Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says Manchester United have "unbelievable quality" despite their struggles this season, playing down his own team's growing injury problems ahead of Sunday's (Dec 16) Premier League clash.
Liverpool are top of the Premier League heading into the weekend fixtures, 16 points ahead of Jose Mourinho's side, but the Klopp is taking nothing for granted.
"I was never interested in the points of Manchester United and I am not today," he said on Friday.
"I am aware of the criticism and stuff but when we analyse them and switch off the sound there is a lot of quality.
"There is speed, technique, physical strength, pretty much everything. They still have (David) de Gea in goal, unbelievable. They have strikers they can switch between (Marcus) Rashford, (Romelu) Lukaku, (Jesse) Lingard, (Anthony) Martial, unbelievable quality."
Mourinho has been wrestling with the problem of how to get the best out of midfielder Paul Pogba, who has not been in the starting line-up for the past two Premier League matches.
Klopp was asked whether he thought United were better with or without the World Cup winner but said he would not comment beyond calling him a "world-class player".
He said he is unlikely to make a move during the January transfer window after insisting his mounting injury problems in defence are not a crisis.
Right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold (foot) and Joel Matip (broken collarbone) this week joined Joe Gomez (broken leg) on the injury list.
Midfielder James Milner played at right-back recently and Nathaniel Clyne has returned to fitness but has barely featured since the beginning of last season.
Klopp admits he may have to get creative but that is unlikely to involve spending in January.
"A crisis is if you feel it is a crisis," he said. "With Trent, it's not as serious as with the other two boys, but of course it's not top-class news, that's clear."
A back problem restricted Clyne to just five appearances in the final few weeks of last season and his injury issues have continued into the current campaign but his return to full training is timely.
"Clyne is a very experienced player," said Klopp.
"Is it perfect? No. But is he experienced enough to do it? Yes, 100 per cent.
"We have other options so we will not push Clyney after not the longest spell of training.
"As long as we have options everything is fine. If we don't have the obvious option any more then we need to be creative."

LONDON â€¢ Manchester United yesterday turned to former striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to steady the ship until the end of the season, confirming him as caretaker manager in the wake of Jose Mourinho's sacking.
The Norwegian, who leaves his role as manager of Molde, whom he led to two Norwegian league titles in 2011 and 2012, will be joined by Mike Phelan as assistant manager.
The Englishman previously carried out that role under former United boss Alex Ferguson for five seasons before leaving in 2013.
On Tuesday, United parted company with Mourinho with the club in sixth spot in the English Premier League, having made their worst start to a season for 28 years.
The appointment of Solskjaer to inject some life into the Red Devils in some ways mirrors his playing career at the club, where he scored 126 goals between 1996 and 2007, often as an impact substitute.
His most memorable contribution came in the 1999 Champions League final victory over Bayern Munich, when he netted the stoppage-time winner.
"Manchester United is in my heart and it's brilliant to be coming back in this role," the former Cardiff manager said in a statement. "I'm really looking forward to working with the very talented squad we have, the staff and everyone at the club."

The "Baby-faced Assassin", as he was popularly known by during his playing days, was given the blessing of Molde and earned plaudits from Ms Erna Solberg, the country's Prime Minister.
She tweeted: "Finally confirmed! Great day for Norwegian football."
Pundit Gary Neville, who has been vocal about United's need to hire someone who meets the club's "key principles", felt his former teammate could "bring the feel-good factor back".
He told Sky Sports: "At this moment in time, I can see where an interim appointment becomes someone who brings favour and goodwill, and he absolutely would.

"(He would) hold the fort until the end of the season and then United can go and get the next manager of this club for the next five to six months."
However, the former United defender warned the club's floundering stars their "excuses were gone now" and they "had to perform" as there would be no more flare-ups.
But not all were sold on Solskjaer taking on one of the biggest jobs in football as an interim boss, with former United midfielder Darren Fletcher declaring the announcement akin to "writing off this season and next season".
He told the BBC: "United should never be in this position. If they appoint a new manager in the summer, he's not going to have much time to look for players. There is a real concern that you could have two seasons of rebuilding again."
Former United midfielder Paul Ince was even more scathing, slamming the decision to opt for Solskjaer over former defensive stalwart Steve Bruce as "absolute madness".
He told bookmaker Paddy Power: "That has to be a joke. Yes, he's (Bruce) been sacked (as Aston Villa manager in October), but we've all been sacked before. Between him and Solskjaer, there's no comparison."

TEHERAN (AFP) - A prominent Iranian politician on Tuesday (Jan 29) called for players in the country's national football team to be punished for clashing with their Japanese opponents after losing in the Asian Cup semi-finals.
In the dying minutes of Iran's 3-0 defeat to Japan on Monday, striker Sardar Azmoun slapped Japan midfielder Gaku Shibasaki in the face, sparking a melee that also involved his teammates Ehsan Hajsafi and Ramin Rezaeian.
Ali Motahari, Deputy Speaker in Iran's Parliament, called for them to be disciplined.
"When we're accused of terrorism and violence by America and Israel, the attitude that Messrs Azmoun, Hajsafi and Rezaeian showed before the eyes of the world was a fatal blow to the Iranian nation and they must be punished," Motahari wrote on his Instagram account.
"The team that could have been Asia's champions failed due to spiritual, psychological and ethical weaknesses," added the reformist politician.
Since pulling out of the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran last year - otherwise known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or JCPOA - the United States has reimposed sanctions on the country and renewed its longstanding accusations about it sponsoring terrorism.
Team Melli, as the Iran national team are known, were widely criticised for their performance against Japan on Tuesday.

The conservative Vatan-e Emrooz daily published an article about them titled "Parjam", which is a play on the Farsi term for the JCPOA (Barjam) and translates as "the cup is lost".
It described a protest by Iran's players over an edge-of-the-box challenge as "childish" and said it distracted them and opened the way for Japan to score their first goal and gain the momentum that took them to victory.
The Iran Football Federation steered clear of the controversy, however, praising the team's "sincere efforts and endeavour" and thanking outgoing coach Carlos Quieroz of Portugal for his eight-year tenure.

LONDON â€¢ The families of footballer Emiliano Sala and David Ibbotson have urged British authorities to continue to search for the missing pilot.
Sala's body was recovered on Wednesday from the wreckage of the plane that plunged into the English Channel on Jan 21, but Ibbotson remains missing after the search was terminated due to bad weather.
Yesterday, his family launched a fundraising campaign to find his remains.
"As a family we are relying on the kindness of the good hearted people to help us raise the much needed funds to help us find our beloved Dad, Husband and Son," the GoFundMe page said.
In a statement released on Friday, Sala's family had also said they were "hoping that the authorities will do their best to find him".
The campaign aims to raise Â£300,000 (S$527,000). If successful, it would mean the tragedy has sparked three hunts. The first one ended on Jan 24, before a second, privately-funded one began.
Cardiff, whom Sala signed for in a club-record Â£15 million (S$26.3 million) transfer just two days before his doomed flight from Nantes to the Welsh capital on Jan 21, have offered to pay for the repatriation of his body to Argentina.
Club manager Neil Warnock said: "It brings the family peace and offers them comfort.
"When I spoke to (his sister) Romina, she couldn't let it go. I wouldn't have been able to let it go. To start that up (the online crowdfunding campaign to engage the services of shipwreck hunter David Mearns) as they did and (to) get such a response is amazing."
Bluebirds owner Vincent Tan said the club "have offered to... arrange to take Emiliano back to rest with his family in Argentina. Even though he will be there, his soul will always be in our hearts".
An inquest into the tragedy is likely to open next week.

For former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler, this was a match to remember. He told BT Sport: "When you talk about the great nights, this is the best ever. It's absolutely incredible.

Nazri, 48, told The Straits Times yesterday: "We can expect a very tough game, especially since Oman had beaten Afghanistan by a good score.

Nazrul Nazari and Irwan Shah started in the fullback positions but Emmeric Ong and Faritz Hameed are in consideration for starting places.
And Nazri has reiterated his faith in his men - especially 34-year-old veteran Khairul Amri, who laid on the pass for Faris Ramli's 82nd-minute winner against Malaysia.
Nazri said: "Amri pushed till the last minute. I believe in him and he delivered.
"He is still a very dangerous player who is very intelligent and he waited till the right moment to create that goal."
But the Lions can expect no favours from Oman, who are led by Erwin Koeman, the older brother of Netherlands national coach Ronald. The 57-year-old Dutchman, who was capped 31 times, told the Malaysian media: "In football, there can be no excuses, you have to win. We are here to win the cup, as simple as that.
"The expectations will be higher, but that's normal everywhere. It's good, as it will push the staff and players to do a little better.
"It's the mentality, what's inside you, what you can bring, and everybody can always bring a little bit more."
But Nazri believes that the Lions have bought into his ideas, saying: "They (the players) believe in my style. We are not going to sit back (against Oman).
"We will attack them, but we cannot leave gaps behind. When we don't have the ball, everyone is a defender.
"Honestly, I'm very happy with the team, there is nothing more I can ask from them, they gave 100 per cent (against Malaysia). Determination is our weapon."

Villarreal and Dinamo Zagreb also won and the other two early games, Sevilla versus Slavia Prague and Eintracht Frankfurt versus Inter Milan, ended all square.
Arsenal had never lost to French opposition away from home in 12 previous European games and they took an early lead when what looked like a cross from Alex Iwobi evaded everyone and sneaked in at the far post.
Playing in their change turquoise-green shirts, the English side looked to be in control but the match changed completely four minutes before halftime when Papastathopoulos was sent off for a second bookable offence.
Rennes equalised from the resulting free kick when Benjamin Bourigeaud rifled home at the second attempt and they came out for the second half looking far more positive than the London side.
The French side went ahead 20 minutes into the second half when Mehdi Zeffane's shot looped off defender Nacho Monreal into the net and Ismaila Sarr made it 3-1 two minutes from time when he powered home a header from a lovely curling left-wing cross.
Sevilla, who have won the Europa League three times, twice went ahead against Slavia Prague but were pegged back on both occasions in a pulsating 2-2 draw in Spain.

LONDON â€¢ Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has requested reports on the club's attempts to clamp down on the fans who sang anti-Semitic songs during the Europa League tie against Vidi in Budapest on Thursday.
The Blues have asked the Hungarian club for close-circuit television footage that they hope will enable them to identify the vocal minority of travelling fans responsible for the chanting, which has disgusted Abramovich and others connected to the club.
Manager Maurizio Sarri has told The Daily Mail he "condemned every form of racism and discrimination". Having experienced it himself while managing in Italy, he also felt it was not just an English problem as "there are some stupid people all over the world".
Midfielder Cesc Fabregas agreed, saying he was happy for the club to be taught a lesson if it led to better behaviour from their supporters.
The Spaniard said: "The focus now is on Chelsea for what happened. Unfortunately, if we look around carefully all over the world, all sports, all football clubs, we will find things like that.
"The people that did it, they will be punished for it and they will be taught a big lesson in their lives. The quicker we get rid of these people, the better. This is not the real face of Chelsea."
Chelsea will issue life bans to any miscreants whom they are able to identify, although that may not be straightforward because the incident took place at an away ground where they do not control the ticketing arrangements.
Abramovich has been kept informed of Chelsea's attempts to combat racist behaviour, which include cooperating with an inquiry by London police into a supporter who allegedly racially abused Raheem Sterling during last Saturday's Premier League game against Manchester City.
The club have since temporarily suspended four people over that incident.
While Abramovich, who is a Russian Jew, has not been to home games this term after being denied a visa to enter the United Kingdom in May, he has followed Chelsea's progress closely and is passionate about eradicating a problem that has afflicted the club for years.
He took a prominent role this year in Chelsea launching a campaign against anti-Semitism, which is a problem among some fans that is exacerbated when they play Tottenham, who are known to have a big Jewish fan base.
While Uefa is still looking into the reports before deciding on any further action, a possible sanction could result in the closure of a section of Stamford Bridge for a Europa League knockout tie.
The ongoing racial storm threatens to overshadow their league game at Brighton, where Sarri's men are hoping to build on their morale-boosting win over champions City last weekend.
But Seagulls manager Chris Hughton feels off-field events will have little bearing on the pitch, saying: "They've adapted very well (to Sarri), any team that beats City at the moment has to have quality. The likes of Chelsea have so many threats that it's difficult to cope with all of them."

The Young LionsÂ have a chance to top the group and qualify for the tournament finals for the first time if North Korea and Hong KongÂ play out a draw in their final game on TuesdayÂ and Fandiâ€™s boysÂ beat Mongolia by more than one goal in a later game.
The 11 group winners and four best runners-up will qualify for the 2020 Under-23 Championship in Thailand in January. The top three finishers in the tournament will qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.Â
Fandi told The Straits Times: â€œIâ€™ve told the boys that miracles do happen, but we have to work to create them, too. All we can do now is work hard and enjoy the ride, and Iâ€™m happy to be on this journey with this bunch of players.â€
He was delighted by the effort and application his players showed against North Korea, who were ranked ninth out of 44 teams in the qualification tournament â€“ Singapore are ranked 30th.
The 56-year-oldâ€™s second son, Ikhsan, had put Singapore in front inside the first minute, latching on to a clever through pass by Hami Syahin and racing down the left flank before squeezing a shot inside the North Korean goalkeeperâ€™s near post.
Ikhsan, 19, said: â€œAfter Hami played that pass, I could hear everyone on the bench shouting â€˜take him onâ€™ so I just kept running at the defender towards goal, and shot.
â€œI didnâ€™t even see where the goal or goalkeeper was, my only thought was to get it on target.â€
North Korea, however, equalised in the seventh minute through a cool turn and finish by Park Kwang Hun.
But the 2016 Under-23 Championship quarter-finalists were unable to add a second goal as Fandiâ€™s sideÂ defended stoutly to deny their opponentsÂ clear-cut chances.
â€œNorth Korea are a very good team, but our boys battled till the very end, and we survived,â€ said Fandi.
â€œThe tactical discipline was there, the boys coped very well. Now we look ahead to Mongolia and we will play to win. They are fighters but, tactically and technically, they are not stronger than us.â€
Added Ikhsan: â€œWeâ€™ve drawn two games now (after the 1-1 draw with Hong Kong on Friday), and the boys are focused to get the win against Mongolia.
â€œTheyâ€™re a good team with some fast and skilful players, but we have that in our team as well.
â€œWeâ€™ve worked so hard (to qualify) and weâ€™re going to try our best and see how things work out.â€

SINGAPORE - Our Tampines Hub will be screening the Uefa Champions League final for free on Sunday (June 2).
Tampines residents and visitors to the Hub can catch the 3am game between Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur at the Town Square, which can seat 5,000 and will be open to full capacity to allow as many football fans as possible to attend.
Free admission to the Town Square is on a first-come-first-served basis and fans can enter the space from 6.30pm on Saturday night (June 1), and the first 5,000 fans will receive a free gift. There will be free movie screenings from 7pm to 1am, when the pre-match commentary broadcast will begin.
Once the Town Square is filled up, fans will also be able to watch the live broadcast at the Festive Plaza within the Hub. There will be live entertainment at the Festive Plaza from midnight till 3am, along with fringe activities outside the team sports hall on the second level from midnight till 4am.
More food and beverage outlets at the Hub will be extending their operating hours to complement those that are already operating 24 hours daily. The hawker centre will also have stalls operating till past 3am to serve visitors at the Hub.
