The boys gave their all: Fandi Ahmad

The Singapore national Under-22 team ended their Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-23 Championship qualification campaign unbeaten after defeating Mongolia 3-1 yesterday, but their joy was dampened by elimination after an insufficient points tally.
Fandi Ahmad's boys finished second in Group G with five points from three games, which included 1-1 draws against Hong Kong and group winners North Korea.
The 11 group winners and four best runners-up will join host Thailand in January's finals.
Even before the last round of fixtures was played yesterday, Oman, Bahrain, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Australia, Myanmar, Malaysia and Vietnam occupied second place in their respective groups with six points.
Despite bowing out, Fandi was happy with how his charges fared, saying: "It all went very well even though we have difficulties. The teamwork is there, the coaching staff are very together, the camaraderie is very good.
"We didn't qualify, but we gave our all. The boys sacrificed a lot and to finish second in the group, without a defeat, is something that has never happened in this age group."
In three previous editions of the AFC U-23 Championship in 2013, 2016 and 2018, Singapore suffered at least a defeat in each qualifying campaign and never finished higher than third in their group.

The Young Lions were stunned after just three minutes at the MFF Football Centre in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia yesterday when Mongolia's Batbayar Khash-Erdene steered a looping header past goalkeeper Zharfan Rohaizad.
Singapore equalised in the 33rd minute through forward Amiruldin Asraf's header from a Hami Syahin cross from the left.
Two minutes before half-time, centre-back Irfan Fandi arrived at the far post to meet left-back Syahrul Sazali's free kick and power his header emphatically past goalkeeper Sanchir Anand.
And, in the 71st minute, forward Ikhsan Fandi flicked the ball on for Hami to sprint clear and score the third goal.
Fandi, 56, said: "We're just happy that the boys came back with good fighting spirit and good discipline.
"I know these Mongolian players are fighters. They fought very hard and they are good players and a hard-working team."
The Under-22s have another major assignment this year in November's SEA Games and Fandi hopes that he can mould them into a unit that can deliver a historic gold medal.
He said: "This is a good team that we have to keep together. The coaching staff are very satisfied with the performance of the players."

Football: National Under-22 team train in Japan ahead of AFC Under-23 C'ship qualifiers

SINGAPORE - The national Under-22 football team will train in Japan ahead of the March 22-26 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-23 Championship qualifiers, the Football Association of Singapore announced on Wednesday (March 6).
National Under-22 head coach Fandi Ahmad named a 24-man squad, in which Young Lions defender Nur Adam Abdullah and Safsa midfielder Amirul Haikal were called up for the first time.
The team will travel to Japan on Thursday (March 7) for a 12-day centralised training camp ahead of the tournament to acclimatise to weather conditions in Mongolia, where temperatures are expected to drop below 5 degC.
Singapore is in Group G with North Korea, Hong Kong and hosts Mongolia for the qualifiers, where the 11 group winners and four best second-placed teams will qualify for the championship.
Fandi said: "This qualifying tournament is a good opportunity for the team to pit themselves against quality opponents in Asia. Some of the players in this squad played in last November's Asean Football Federation Suzuki Cup. Their experience will stand them in good stead for these qualifiers and I am sure the other players will also benefit from their experience.
"Given Mongolia's climate, the training camp in Japan is critical for the team to acclimatise to playing in cold weather. We want the boys to be able to focus on the qualifiers and show what they can bring to the team."
Captain Irfan Fandi, who last November signed a one-year contract with Thai League 2 side Bangkok Glass, said: "It's only been a few months but I have already learnt a lot from playing overseas. I am excited to share my experience with the team and hope that I can bring a positive impact to the team.
"We will be working hard to prepare ourselves for the qualifiers and play our hearts out for every match."

LIVERPOOL (AFP) - Virgil van Dijk returns to his former club Southampton on Friday (April 5) with a growing reputation as one of the most influential figures in the Premier League title race between his Liverpool side and Manchester City.
For all their attacking threat, Jurgen Klopp's men owe a huge debt to their Dutch defender, signed from Southampton 15 months ago for an eye-watering Â£75 million (S$134 million) fee, the size of which raised eyebrows.
But now the investment looks one of the wisest in recent Premier League history, with one Van Dijk moment in particular, during the weekend win over Tottenham, being held up as an example of his peerless form.
With the game finely poised at 1-1 at Anfield on Sunday, Tottenham had a two-on-one break, featuring Moussa Sissoko and Son Heung-min against the Liverpool centre-half.
Van Dijk took the decision to leave Sissoko with the ball, forcing him into a shot that the nervous Tottenham man missed hopelessly, paving the way for Liverpool to snatch a dramatic last-gasp winner.
"Of course," said teammate Andy Robertson when asked if that one moment showcased Van Dijk's skills to their utmost.
"He made the right decision there. Look, it's getting to the point of the season where both teams wanted to win it. If it's maybe in the first month of the season, it probably sees out as a 1-1 draw.
"But they're fighting for Champions League spots and they needed three points and we needed three points. That's why we brought on extra attackers and we went for it and tried to get the three points and luckily we did.
"But these situations are going to happen. We're maybe going to get a wee bit exposed at the back but there's nobody better to deal with it. Luckily we got away with one there and they've not got away with it."
Robertson was not the only admirer following the Dutchman's role in that victory and, with every passing week, the case for Van Dijk to be named as the Premier League's player of the year is gaining momentum.
Liverpool's protracted bid to sign the defender from Southampton, which had been thwarted the previous summer, was met with disbelief by many as he became the most expensive defender in the history of the game.
But his displays last season, in helping Liverpool reach the Champions League final, answered many of the doubters and Van Dijk's form has, if anything, been even more impressive this season.
Manchester City's Raheem Sterling is another strong candidate for the end-of-season individual awards but Van Dijk has made a strong case and the only slight concern for Klopp after the Tottenham victory was the sight of his key defender using an ice pack on a muscle injury after the game.
However, concerns he could be a fitness doubt for the return to his old club were quickly dispelled when Liverpool showed footage of the 27-year-old taking part in a full training session on Wednesday.
"He's so important to us not only as a player but as a person. I couldn't say a bad word about him even if I wanted," said Klopp.
"Yes he has improved us and he has improved since he came here as well. He is a different player to when he was at Southampton. Champions League quarter-finals, semi-finals and final help you as a player."

LONDON â€¢ A report late on Sunday by The Sun claiming that owner Mike Ashley had agreed to sell Newcastle United to Abu Dhabi billionaire Sheikh Khaled bin Zayed Al Nehayan for Â£350 million (S$612 million) appears to have been premature, according to Sky Sports.
The British tabloid said the contract between Ashley and Khaled, who is a member of the Abu Dhabi ruling family and a cousin of Manchester City owner Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, had been signed and sent to the Premier League.

Ashley, who bought a controlling stake in the Premier League club in 2007, has in the past tried to sell the club, whose fans have been increasingly vocal against his ownership over the years.
The founder of British sportswear retailer Sports Direct International said last October that he had not received any acceptable offers for Newcastle, a year after he officially put the club up for sale.
However, he told Sky in December that talks on a deal had made promising progress, although he prefaced that by insisting "any potential buyer of the club must be able to provide transfer funds".
Khaled, who is also the founder of Bin Zayed Group, a leading conglomerate with diverse business interests from construction to energy, previously failed in his bid to buy Liverpool for Â£2 billion last year, according to the Daily Mail.
The Premier League and the Emirati's company did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment.
Newcastle officials have also refused to reveal more, with a senior source telling the Daily Mail: "We would politely decline to comment at this time."
According to local daily The Chronicle, previous takeover bids from former Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon and British businesswoman Amanda Staveley had "collapsed despite both entering the due diligence stage".

SHANGHAI (AFP) - President Xi Jinping has vowed to make China a footballing force and is prepared to go to great lengths to do it, sending thousands of toddlers to "football-focused" kindergartens.
China, which has a population of 1.4 billion but has continually underachieved in football, will start trialling the kindergartens in 2019, state media said.
Citing the ministry of education, Xinhua news agency said that "each provincial-level region" will have 50 to 200 football-centric kindergartens.
"The pilot programme aims to cultivate interest in football in children through popular football games and create an atmosphere favourable for football culture to grow," Xinhua said, citing a ministry directive.
"Various physical activities tailored for kids will be held, during which children are encouraged to run, jump, climb, throw and shoot balls."
Li Jianli, director of a kindergarten in the Chinese capital, told the Global Times: "We have soccer coaches for kids who are over five and many other kindergartens in Beijing run soccer programmes too."
In October, the Chinese Football Association announced plans for 10,000 kindergartens across the country.

LONDON (AFP) - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Manchester United are not scared of playing the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final against at the Camp Nou after drawing Barcelona on Friday (March 15).
United were originally drawn to play at Barcelona in the first leg, which would have given them the safety net of playing the decisive return at Old Trafford.
But with Manchester City due to play their quarter-final second leg against Tottenham at home in the same week, Uefa decided to make United host Barca in the first leg on April 10, after stipulating in advance following advice from local authorities that United and City could not play at home on successive nights.
"I'm probably completely different to 99 per cent of managers, as I prefer away last like we had against PSG (in the previous round)," Solskjaer said.
After losing 2-0 to Paris Saint-Germain in Manchester, Solskjaer's side claimed a stunning 3-1 second-leg victory in the French capital to progress to the last eight.
"If you can get a decent result at home, then we know we can go away and hurt anyone like we did in Paris," he added.
Having to face Lionel Messi's Barca on their turf in the second leg on April 16 could put United at a disadvantage, as the Catalans have not lost any of their last 30 home games in the competition, winning all but three of those.

But United interim boss Solskjaer insists he is happy to travel to Spain with the tie potentially in the balance after his team showed they could cope with that pressure in the last 16.
"We want these games against the biggest clubs and the biggest teams. We had the final against them in 2009 and 2011 (both of which Barca won) and the semi-final in 2008 when Scholesy (Paul Scholes) scored," Solskjaer said.
"It's these games our fans and this club crave. We are looking forward to this one."
Solskjaer's trip to the Camp Nou will stir happy memories for the former United striker, who scored the dramatic stoppage-time winner in the club's famous Champions League final triumph against Bayern Munich in 1999.

"We want to be effective in and out of pre-season. It is not just the results, but the performance that defines who we are. If we can win and entertain with attractive football, that would be the ideal scenario."
Two-time winners Home United are also another local side to have gotten one over Albirex this season, when they beat the defending champions on penalties for the Community Shield last Saturday.
The Protectors were the best local side last season, finishing league runners-up and winning the AFC Cup Asean zonal final. "They played with five at the back against us and we couldn't score, so it is up to us to find ways to adapt and penetrate against such teams in the future."
Meanwhile, the dark horses in the nine-team SPL have to be Hougang United, who added considerable firepower to a team that scored a league-low of just 22 goals in 24 games last season.
While they have never finished in the top half or won any major titles, the Cheetahs are gunning for history, with coach Clement Teo declaring that "third would be an underachievement".
Retaining forwards Iqbal Hussain, Shahfiq Ghani and Fazrul Nawaz, they have since signed Faris Ramli and welcomed back Croat Stipe Plazibat and captain Zulfahmi Arifin.
They initially secured the services of 2015 and 2016 top scorer Rafael Ramazotti, only for the Brazilian to go missing and sign for Mexican club FC Juarez.
Teo was positive and saw this development as a blessing in disguise as it allowed him to shore up his defence with South Korean centre-back Kong Howon.
He said: "We wanted two foreign strikers to give us more firepower, but it was also true that Afiq Yunos was our only natural centre-back.
"The Ramazotti incident allowed us to sign Kong and it was a bonus we picked up Faris, and he will give us a different dimension with his ability to take on players. Yes, we have many attackers, but this also means there is a good and healthy competition to start a game.
"With the team we assembled, we feel we need to be in the title race. Among our players, the mindset is even a draw is an underachievement."
Zulfahmi, who has returned after one season with Thailand's Chonburi, added: "Any team can win the league this season and Albirex are beatable. It depends on who are the most consistent across 24 games.
"Thanks to our chairman Bill Ng and the management, we now have quality attackers and a great team, so we got to be more adventurous and clinical than before to fight for the targets we want to achieve."

AL AIN, United Arab Emirates (REUTERS) - Defending champions Australia crashed out of the Asian Cup on Friday (Jan 25) when a contentious Ali Mabkhout goal earned hosts the United Arab Emirates a 1-0 victory and a semi-final meeting with Qatar next week.
Mabkhout struck midway through the second half after Milos Degenek under-hit a pass back to Mat Ryan, and the Al Jazira man swooped to round the goalkeeper and slot the ball into an empty net for his ninth goal in two Asian Cups.
The Australians complained Degenek had been fouled prior to giving away possession by Mohammed Abdulrahman, but Japanese referee Ryuji Sato waved away the protests and the goal stood.

LONDON â€¢ For Chelsea, the mutiny. For Manchester City, the bounty. A humdrum League Cup final won 4-3 on penalties by City after a goal-less finish will be remembered more for the dramatic events late on in extra time.
Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga refused to leave the field when summoned to the bench by his manager Maurizio Sarri, who wanted to bring on Willy Caballero, a known penalty specialist.
It was an unprecedented sight on Sunday, but one that brought swift and unanimous condemnation.
Pundit Chris Sutton lashed out at the Spain international, telling BBC Sport "Kepa should be sacked".
The former Blues forward said: "I've seen players disgruntled before and throw a boot or their shirt down when they're taken off, but players know the rules.
"That should be his last performance in a Chelsea shirt. He's a disgrace, never seen anything like it.
"If I were Sarri, I would walk. You can't be undermined... It's not just Kepa who has disrespected Sarri, it's the Chelsea players."
Chelsea great John Terry felt Kepa's blatant dissent had subverted the Italian's authority.
He told Sky Sports: "Once your number goes up, you have to come off. It's a cloud over Chelsea's display after they played so well."
However, both Kepa and Sarri were on the same page afterwards, with the Â£71.6 million (S$126.3 million) summer signing issuing a statement on social media.
He tweeted: "At no time has it been my intention to disobey the coach or any of his decisions. The coach thought I was not in a position to play and my intention was to express I was good to continue helping the team. I have full respect for the coach and his authority."
Sarri also portrayed the furore as "a big misunderstanding", insisting: "I understood there was a problem and we needed a change. I understood he had cramp but the problem was not cramp, so he was able to go to penalties."
However, pundits were not buying the official line after Sarri, who had to be restrained by defender Antonio Rudiger, was seen repeatedly gesturing at Kepa to come off before storming down the tunnel.
Former Chelsea midfielder Craig Burley questioned on Twitter if that was the case, then "why Sarri was still trying to kill him just before the pens".
Ex-Chelsea player Ruud Gullit also claimed it was simply "a political answer for the newspapers".
Kepa did go on to save Leroy Sane's spot kick, but should have done better when Sergio Aguero's penalty slipped underneath him.
Chelsea fans were left wondering what could have been, had Caballero, who according to the Mirror has saved 11 out of 38 spot kicks in his career, come on.
City captain Vincent Kompany was relieved his former teammate was not fielded for the shoot-out, saying: "I know how good Caballero is on penalties. Last time, he won it (the 2016 Cup) for us so I didn't want him on."
While Pep Guardiola was "happy to win back-to-back in this competition for the first time in our history", it came at a cost with Fernandinho and Aymeric Laporte out injured for the "next few weeks".

MADRID (REUTERS) - Holders Real Madrid were sensationally knocked out of the Champions League on Tuesday (March 5) after being thrashed 4-1 at home by an outstanding Ajax Amsterdam who overturned a first-leg deficit to reach the quarter-finals 5-3 on aggregate.
Moroccan midfielder Hakim Ziyech fired Ajax into a shock seventh-minute lead after a lay off from the outstanding Dusan Tadic, who also provided the pass for David Neres to double the Dutch side's advantage in the 18th.
Madrid, who were missing inspirational captain Sergio Ramos through suspension and hit the woodwork twice in the first half, came out stronger after the interval but were dealt a fatal blow when Serbia international Tadic crowned his sensational display by hammering into the top corner in the 62nd minute.
Substitute Marco Asensio gave Madrid a glimmer of hope by striking back but it was quickly extinguished by a breathtaking free kick from Lasse Schone, condemning Real to a fourth consecutive home defeat in all competitions.
Things got worse for the hosts, who had won the last three Champions League titles in a row, when Nacho was sent off in stoppage time for two bookings.
Ajax, who have won the trophy four times, most recently in 1995, reached the last eight of Europe's top competition for the first time since 2003.
Thirteen-times winners Madrid, who have lifted the trophy in four of the last five years, and had reached at least the semi-finals for the last eight seasons, suffered their earliest elimination since 2010.
Madrid, who had suffered consecutive home defeats to Barcelona in the run up to the game and are an embarrassing 12 points behind the Catalans in La Liga, endured rotten fortune throughout the game, losing Lucas Vazquez and livewire Brazilian teenager Vinicius Junior to injury in the first half.
The night could have gone very differently had Madrid defender Raphael Varane headed under the crossbar instead of against it in the fifth minute, moments before Ziyech scored.
Ajax had Madrid on the ropes after the second goal and should have further increased their advantage, as Neres chipped wide when clean through against Madrid keeper Thibaut Courtois.
The Belgian later leapt across his goal to parry a shot from Ziyech, and used his body to thwart Tadic.
He made some more impressive saves in the second half but was powerless to stop Tadic's thunderbolt and was caught out by Schone's free kick, which looked to be a cross but went straight in.
Real substitute Gareth Bale blasted against the near post in the first half and suffered a painful end to the match. The Wales forward was forced to stay on the pitch after appearing to injure his ankle late on as coach Santiago Solari had used all three substitutes.
