Football: Southampton stun fading Spurs, Newcastle edge five-goal Everton thriller

LONDON (AFP) - Tottenham’s winless run in the Premier League stretched to four games as Mauricio Pochettino’s men threw away an early lead to lose 2-1 at Southampton on Saturday (March 9).
The Saints’ spirited second-half comeback ensured they remain two points above the relegation zone despite Cardiff’s 2-0 win over West Ham.
Brighton also boosted their survival hopes thanks to Anthony Knockaert’s brilliant strike to win 2-1 at Crystal Palace, while Newcastle battled back from 2-0 down to beat Everton 3-2.
Despite their poor domestic form of late, Spurs were boosted by victory at Borussia Dortmund in midweek to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League.  But Tottenham are now in grave danger of missing out on Champions League football next season.
Pochettino’s side remain in third but their lead over Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea is a precarious one with all three chasers in action on Sunday.
“I don’t want to criticise too much but when you lose a game that was under control after 45 minutes, should be 3-0, 4-0 and finishes in 2-1 defeat, it is difficult to accept,” said Pochettino, who was serving the first of a two-game touchline ban.
“It is so difficult to understand why we changed so much from the first half to the second. I am very disappointed, we were better in everything and then we lose the game.”
Dele Alli made his return after seven weeks out with a hamstring injury and the England midfielder teed up Harry Kane to score his 200th career goal on 26 minutes.
However, Spurs’ wastefulness in failing to add to their lead came back to cost them as Ralph Hassenhuettl’s men improved markedly after the break and secured a vital three points in their attempt to beat the drop.
“The manager told us to be a bit more aggressive, we sat off them a little in the first half. The second half epitomised everything he has done for us so far,” said match-winner James Ward-Prowse.
Fresh from scoring his first professional goal away to Manchester United last weekend, right-back Yan Valery levelled from Stuart Armstrong’s cross.  Ward-Prowse then completed the comeback with a stunning free-kick curled into the top corner to leave Hugo Lloris helpless.
Newcastle remain six points above the relegation zone and moved up to 13th thanks to a thrilling fightback of their own to beat Everton.  Dominic Calvert-Lewin put the visitors in front on 18 minutes before a moment of high controversy when Jordan Pickford pulled down Salomon Rondon.

Vardy double

A penalty was awarded, but the England number one was not sent-off and then saved Matt Ritchie’s resulting spot-kick.  Richarlison soon put Everton 2-0 in front, but Newcastle struck three times in 19 second-half minutes through Rondon and Ayoze Perez’s double for a deserved win.
Brendan Rodgers secured his first win as Leicester boss thanks to Jamie Vardy’s double to bring up his century of goals for the Foxes in a 3-1 win over Fulham, who are now 13 points adrift of safety.  Huddersfield also look dead and buried as Bournemouth cruised to their first away win since October with a 2-0 victory at the John Smith’s Stadium.
Callum Wilson opened the scoring on his return from a two-month injury layoff to aid his chances of making the England squad later this week in front of the watching Gareth Southgate before he teed up Ryan Fraser to double the Cherries’ advantage 24 minutes from time.
Cardiff, though, gave themselves hope as early goals in each half from Junior Hoilett and Victor Camarasa gave the Welsh side a precious three points over a hugely disappointing West Ham.  Brighton also secured a much-needed win to move level on points with rivals Palace, five above the drop zone.
Chris Hughton’s side took the lead through Glenn Murray’s early goal at Selhurst Park before Luka Milivojevic equalised with a second-half penalty.  However, Knockaert sparked wild celebrations from the Brighton fans when he curled into the top corner the winner 16 minutes from time.

Japan punish goal-shy Saudis to reach quarter-finals

SHARJAH • Japan coach Hajime Moriyasu was full of praise for his players' fighting spirit after they overcame three-time Asian Cup champions Saudi Arabia 1-0 to advance to the quarter-finals.
Takehiro Tomiyasu's lone strike was enough to send the Saudis crashing out at the Sharjah Stadium in the United Arab Emirates yesterday.
"I knew Saudi Arabia was a team with offensive power and I was ready to face a tough battle," Moriyasu said after the match.
"But they fought more strongly than I imagined and my players took a tough stance all the way to the end.
"They persistently fought without stopping their feet.
"Of course we wanted to attack even more, but I think the players did well in terms of the flow of the game."
Japan, record four-time winners of the Asian Cup, march on to a quarter-final with South-east Asian champions Vietnam despite not yet hitting top form at the tournament.
The Vietnamese stunned Jordan 4-2 on penalties after their last-16 clash ended 1-1 on Sunday.
Saudi Arabia were in the ascendancy early on, but it was Japan who snatched the advantage with a straightforward goal from a set piece on 20 minutes.
From a corner, Belgium-based defender Tomiyasu climbed above his marker and nodded firmly into the bottom corner for his first of the tournament.
The Saudis twice came close with headers as they battled to find an equaliser, and Hatan Bahbri curled one just off target as he went for the top corner.
Yoshinori Muto's shot was blocked on the hour mark, but most of the chances were falling to Saudi Arabia, who will rue some wasteful finishing.
Bahbri's shot from outside the box crept narrowly wide and Ali Al-Bulaihi powered a strong header over when the ball was knocked back into the area after a free kick.
But, despite a late flurry, it remained another goalless outing for the Saudis, who have not found the net since scoring six goals in their first two group games.
Japan, who claimed their last title in 2011, extended their perfect winning record in the tournament after also winning all three of their group matches.
Meanwhile, defending champions Australia reached the last eight after beating Uzbekistan 4-2 in a penalty shoot-out following a goal-less draw after extra-time.
The Socceroos will meet host United Arab Emirates or Kyrgyzstan in the quarter-finals on Friday.

Football: Mohamed Salah retains African award to seal great day for Egypt

DAKAR (AFP) - Mohamed Salah completed a memorable day for Egyptian football by retaining his African Player of the Year title in Senegal on Tuesday (Jan 8).
The 26-year-old Liverpool star finished first with club-mate Senegalese Sadio Mane and Arsenal and Gabon striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang the other finalists.
It was an identical outcome to last year when Salah became only the second Egyptian after 1983 winner Mahmoud al Khatib to be voted the best footballer in Africa.
Egypt crushed sole rivals South Africa 16-1 earlier on Tuesday in a CAF executive committee vote in Dakar to decide which country succeeded Cameroon as 2019 Cup of Nations hosts.
Delays to preparations and concerns about security resulted in the central African nation being replaced as hosts, and they will stage the 2021 tournament instead.
While the 15-vote winning margin for Egypt was unexpected, the success of Salah was anticipated as he continues to score regularly for the English Premier League leaders.
Salah netted 44 goals in all competitions for Liverpool last season - his first with the Anfield club - and has bagged 13 Premier League goals so far this season.
Ironically, Aubameyang has scored one league goal more than Salah, topping the charts with Tottenham Hotspur and England star Harry Kane on 14.
Salah was born in a northern Egyptian town Nagrig and used to make eight-hour return trips on buses to train with Cairo-based El Mokawloon (Arab Contractors).
Spotted by scouts from Swiss club Basel, he moved there in 2012 before joining Premier League giants Chelsea two years later.
Salah found scoring difficult early in his professional career and was nicknamed "chancentod" (chance killer) by the Swiss media.

OFF-TARGET

Later, playing for Chelsea in a League Cup tie, the Egyptian was so off-target with a goal attempt that the ball trickled over the touchline for a throw-in.
Unhappy with his two-goal return, Chelsea lent Salah to Italian outfits Fiorentina and Roma, then sold him to the latter club.
Salah blossomed in Rome, averaging close to a goal every two matches, and Liverpool paid almost £37 million (S$64 million) to sign him two years ago.
The Egyptian had his share of setbacks last year, too, with an injury in the Champions League final loss to Real Madrid also keeping him out of a World Cup defeat by Uruguay.
He returned to score against hosts Russia and Saudi Arabia, but the Pharaohs exited their first appearance at the global showpiece in 28 years without securing even one point.
Salah netted twice and missed two penalties three months later in a 6-0 Cup of Nations rout of Niger and snatched the late winner in a 3-2 victory over Tunisia in the same competition.
Having defended his Player of the Year title, his next goal will be to match the four straight wins in the competition by former Manchester City and Ivory Coast star Yaya Toure.
The other male awards went to France-born Morocco coach Herve Renard, the Mauritania national team, and Moroccan Achraf Hakimi in the youth category.
South African Chrestinah Kgatlana was voted Women's Player of the Year and South Africa coach Desiree Ellis and the Nigeria national team were the other female winners.
The Goal of the Year award also went to Kgatlana.

United just a cup team: Keane

United just a cup team: Keane

LONDON • Having experienced the heady highs of Sir Alex Ferguson's trophy-laden reign, it has pained former Manchester United stars Gary Neville and Roy Keane to see the club go from perennial title favourites to also-rans.
While the Red Devils have been in decline since the retirement of their greatest manager in 2013, at no time was the contrast between the haves and have-nots more stark than at Anfield on Sunday.
Ferguson, who was caught on camera looking on in disgust during United's 3-1 loss, had stepped away from football in the knowledge he had "knocked Liverpool off their perch".
But the Reds, under Jurgen Klopp, are threatening to return to the summit of English football and, on current form, the unbeaten league leaders have to be considered the front runners to land their first league title since 1990.
The defeat by a two-goal margin failed to tell the full story of Liverpool's dominance. They racked up a league record of 36 shots, the most United have faced even if only 11 were on target. And the Red Devils have now let in 29 goals, one more than the whole of last term.
On the other hand, the home side, with only seven goals conceded, can boast the best defensive record in the league - something that used to be a Jose Mourinho hallmark - and Neville referenced that on BBC Five Live, declaring Liverpool to be "streets ahead".
He said: "Not one of the United midfielders can pass a football. I find it staggering. United were awful. It's not good enough."

  • 1990
Manchester United's 26 points after 17 Premier League games is their worst points haul since 1990-91 (26 points).

    36

The pundit also told Sky Sports he believed Mourinho was on borrowed time at Old Trafford, saying: "I think it (the sacking) will happen, my preference would always be to get to the end of the season.
"But the boardroom is so naive, it's unbelievable. The minute he came back from pre-season, he was at it and the club was out of control. Nobody above him can handle him. It will cost a fortune to lose him now. The club needs to reset."
Keane was equalling scathing, labelling the side he used to skipper as "an average Premier League side, nothing more".
Writing off their chances of silverware, he said: "They are Manchester United of the 1980s, a decent cup team."
Pundit Robbie Savage, who came through United's academy, felt the Portuguese manager could have "no excuses" as he had "over £100 million (S$173 million) on the bench".

He said: "They've spent plenty of money, they've brought players in. To be this far behind (19 points from the top) is ridiculous. It's not acceptable. They're not going to win the Champions League, they're not going to get into the top four. Where are they going?"
One player who was left kicking his heels as an unused substitute was £89 million club-record signing Paul Pogba.
He was not named in the United starting XI for a third straight league game while Fred, a £50 million summer recruit, was not even part of the squad. Pundits unanimously agreed that the France midfielder's time at the club, like Mourinho, was also coming to an end.
Savage added: "I don't think Pogba has a future at the club. The big question is, who will be at United longer, Mourinho or Pogba?"
With United now off to their worst league start since 1990-91, Mourinho cut a deflated figure at his post-match press conference, conceding that his side could not live with Klopp's men playing "200 miles per hour with the ball and without the ball".
And the 55-year-old tried to blame his sacked predecessors, David Moyes and Louis van Gaal, saying that he had inherited a squad that is "permanently injured".
"Some of our players are always injured and it's not with me - it was before me. If you look to the stats with van Gaal and David, we had players who are permanently injured and physicality is difficult to get," he insisted.

Hazard leads tributes for departing Fabregas
LONDON • Chelsea forward Eden Hazard has paid tribute to Cesc Fabregas, saying that he was "lucky" to have played with the Spaniard ahead of the midfielder's move to French Ligue 1 side Monaco.
Fabregas shared an emotional moment with the Stamford Bridge faithful after Saturday's 2-0 FA Cup third-round win over Nottingham Forest, applauding all sides of the crowd while he was also in tears.
The 31-year-old, who joined Chelsea in 2014, will reunite with former Arsenal teammate Thierry Henry, who is now the Monaco coach.
"In five years, I can say that I was lucky to play with him," Hazard said.
"Since the beginning when he came, we saw with the first year we won the double together.
"Top guy on the pitch, off the pitch, a great friend of mine.

"Just admiration about this guy. I hope he will have a good future. It's a bit hard now, but he's still very good and he will enjoy."
When asked what Fabregas had given Chelsea, Hazard added: "Everything."
Fabregas moved to the Blues from Barcelona two years after Hazard arrived from Lille. The duo have won two Premier League titles, one League Cup and one FA Cup during their time together.
Chelsea assistant coach Carlo Cudicini also hailed Fabregas as "one of a kind".
"What can I say about Cesc? He is a player who is unique, he has an unbelievable awareness and vision of where his teammates are on the pitch," the former goalkeeper said.
"I think he is one of the few who have the ability to give balls behind the defensive line that are so precise.
"He is a one-of-a-kind player. He has been fantastic for the teams he played for before us and the contribution he has given this club and to this team has been amazing. Cesc is a top, top player."
Cudicini added that Alvaro Morata's two goals in the win over Nottingham Forest would "free his mind" after a lean spell for the Spanish striker.
Morata struck twice in the second half, his first goals in domestic competition for two months.
"It was very important for him to score two goals which can only be good for his confidence. Hopefully, it will be good for his morale that he scored and, hopefully, he will be more free in his mind," Cudicini said.
"For a striker, it's difficult when you go through a spell when you don't score many goals, so his body language was a bit down but, in training, he's working very hard.
"We all knew that sooner or later, he would be able to turn the corner and start scoring goals."

Football: Keane accuses Man United players of 'getting away with murder'

LONDON (AFP) - Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has accused the current crop of players at Old Trafford of getting away "with murder" and of throwing Jose Mourinho "under the bus".
The Irishman's broadside comes just days after Mourinho was sacked as United manager, having presided over their worst-ever start to a Premier League season.
Former United player Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was this week named caretaker manager until the end of the season.
Mourinho had reportedly fallen out with several of his first-team stars towards the end of his two-and-a-half-year tenure at the helm of United and Keane feels the behaviour of the players may be at least partly to blame.
Speaking to BBC Radio 5 live, Keane said: "I do think the players obviously get away with murder. Just the way they hide behind the manager... They have thrown him under the bus.
"People said Mourinho has been falling out with players. Well, you would fall out with players, that's the name of the game when players turn up overweight or players aren't training properly and not producing.
"And then for some of them to down tools, shame on some of those players.

"I'm not Mourinho's biggest fan, don't get me wrong but I just can't tolerate footballers who just hide behind their agents, their pals in the media. It's a bit of a joke, really."
Keane won seven Premier League titles, four FA Cups and the Champions League at United and believes any player unrest during his time in the dressing room would have been quelled.
"The modern player, they're not just weak players, they're very weak human beings," he said.
"You can't say a word to them."
He added: "It wouldn't have happened in our dressing room just because of the fact we had good characters and good leaders.
"We wouldn't have tolerated lads not putting a shift in."

LONDON (AFP) - Liverpool moved back top of the Premier League with a 2-0 win at Cardiff, but Manchester United and Arsenal did little for their chances of Champions League qualification for next season in shock defeats to Everton and Crystal Palace respectively on Sunday.
United were thrashed 4-0 at Everton to continue a miserable run of six defeats from their last eight games.
Arsenal remain fourth, but failed to open up a five-point lead over United as Crystal Palace became the first visiting side to win at the Emirates in the Premier League since Manchester City on the opening weekend of the campaign with an impressive 3-2 victory.
Liverpool suffered no such slip ups to move two points ahead of Manchester City, who still have a game in hand, at the top.
Jurgen Klopp's men have now won their last nine games in all competitions, to also set up a Champions League semi-final against Barcelona.
"It's really massive. We spoke a lot about this game, how special it is, how special the situation is for the opponent," said Klopp, who bemoaned the dry state of Cardiff's pitch under baking temperatures.
"It was not a game for playing around. It was a battle of will, who wants it more." But in keeping with recent weeks, Klopp could not relax until late on as Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah missed big chances to give the visitors a first-half lead.
Georginio Wijnaldum finally broke the deadlock in emphatic fashion with a thumping finish from Trent Alexander-Arnold's corner just before the hour mark.
Liverpool had to survive one major scare when Cardiff captain Sean Morrison failed to connect with his head when it seemed harder to miss with the goal at his mercy 26 minutes from time.
Morrison then compounded his error at the other end when he grappled with Salah inside the area and referee Martin Atkinson pointed to the spot, even though the Egyptian threw himself dramatically to the floor.
James Milner stepped up to bury the resulting penalty and ensure Liverpool are poised to strike if City stumble.

Man United humiliated

Unfortunately, for Klopp's side, United look in no fit state to inflict the blow on the champions they need come the Manchester derby on Wednesday.
Everton celebrated their biggest win over a shambolic Red Devils since 1984 to move up to seventh.
Richarlison's acrobatic effort and a long range effort from Gylfi Sigurdsson inside the first 28 minutes gave Everton the perfect start.
And they struck twice again early in the second-half through Lucas Digne and Theo Walcott.
"From the first whistle everything went wrong," said Solskjaer.
"I just want to apologise to the fans. They're the only people with the badge on today who can hold their heads high, because we can't." And the Norwegian hinted that major changes are to come in the summer whether they reach the Champions League or not.
"We can't change the whole squad, it has to be one step at a time but I said all along, I'm going to be successful here and there are players who won't be part of that successful team."
Arsenal wasted a glorious opportunity to move above north London rivals Tottenham into third as after 10 straight home league wins, Palace shocked the Emirates with the three points that guarantees their survival.
Christian Benteke's first goal for a year put the Eagles in front before Mesut Ozil equalised early in the second half.
However, Shkodran Mustafi's blunder allowed Wilfried Zaha to put Palace back in front before James McArthur took advantage of more woeful Arsenal defending to make it 3-1.
"It's a big frustration because it was a big opportunity. At the set pieces, we didn't work and weren't as strong as we have been," said Arsenal boss Unai Emery.
"Their second goal was very bad for us and took away our confidence." Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang reduced the deficit, but it was too late to stop Palace's first league win at Arsenal since October 1994.

Football: Nike 'very concerned' about rape accusation against Brazilian soccer star Neymar

SAO PAULO (REUTERS) - Nike is "very concerned" about a rape accusation against Brazilian soccer star Neymar, the world's largest sportswear maker said on Thursday (June 6), raising questions about its sponsorship of one of the sport's most famous players.
Neymar denies the allegation of rape and has said the woman was trying to extort him. The woman appeared on Brazilian TV on Wednesday and said Neymar raped her in a Paris hotel.
Mastercard Inc also cancelled a planned ad campaign featuring the star of the Brazilian national team and French club Paris Saint-Germain, Brazilian media reported on Thursday.
Mastercard said in a statement it was suspending its use of Neymar in advertising until the situation is "cleared up," according to reports in Brazil's three biggest newspapers.
The Nike statement said "we are very concerned" by the allegations "and will continue to closely monitor the situation."
A press representative for Mastercard in Brazil confirmed to Reuters the company had planned a campaign to coincide with this month's Copa America tournament, but she did not confirm a decision to suspend Neymar's role.
US press representatives for the company did not immediately reply to requests for comment.
A police report seen by Reuters showed that a woman had accused Neymar, 27, of raping her at a Paris hotel last month. Sao Paulo police are investigating the accusation.
Following media reports on the matter, Neymar posted a long video on Instagram, in which he denied the accusations, said he was a victim of extortion and shared messages he exchanged with the alleged victim, including racy photos he had received.
That led police in Rio de Janeiro to open an investigation into whether Neymar had committed a crime by posting those intimate pictures online.
A press representative for Neymar did not respond to requests for comment on the Mastercard sponsorship on a Wednesday night interview his accuser gave the SBT TV station.
"I was a victim of rape," she said in her first on-camera interview since her accusation became public.
She said that she and Neymar began exchanging private messages over social media, and that he paid for her flight to Paris and her hotel.
She said the relationship was consensual at first, but that Neymar quickly became aggressive, began to hit her and forced her to have sex with him without the use of a condom, despite her telling him repeatedly to stop.
Some of Neymar's teammates have come out in support of him, but national team coach Tite declined to pass judgment on the matter.
The Brazilian Football Confederation said on Thursday that Neymar would be dropped from the national team for the Copa America because of an ankle injury suffered in a friendly match against Qatar the night before.

Revived Dutch ready for 'big things'

AMSTERDAM • After years of languishing in the wilderness, it is fair to say Dutch football is enjoying something of a renaissance, with Ajax, the country's most successful club, at the heart of its revival.
The Netherlands' failure to qualify for two successive major tournaments in Euro 2016 and last summer's World Cup in Russia led many to call for the country's famed system of talent production to be overhauled.
However, when Ronald Koeman took over the hot seat as national coach in February last year, he was not overawed by the task at hand, but insisted that he saw "a bright future".
The critics and pundits could not see it at that time, but the former Dutch international knew there was a crop of budding players coming through at Ajax and patience was required to harness their talents.
Time, of course, is a commodity that is short in modern football.
But with Ajax's Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt developing at an "unprecedented" rate, something the club's coach Erik ten Hag has acknowledged, the Dutch have maintained an upward curve under Koeman.
They have lost just two games out of 10 played, and have also qualified for the semi-finals of the Nations League.
Their progress has also paid dividends in Europe, with Ajax in the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time since 2003.
De Jong and de Ligt are not the only Dutch players starring for club and country, with Virgil van Dijk marshalling the backline of Premier League leaders Liverpool with aplomb, having conceded the least number of goals this term.
Speaking to Fifa.com ahead of today's Euro 2020 qualifier against Belarus, Koeman admitted there was "a really positive feeling in the country again".
He said: "Big things will be expected of us in the qualifiers and that reflects the results and performances we've had.
"I always believed I could help improve things. He (de Jong) is simply an important player for this Oranje (team), but there are also other young boys who have shown that they have added value in a short time, think of de Ligt.
"Van Dijk, my captain, has been really important to us, and so have the likes of Gini Wijnaldum and Kevin Strootman.
"It's up to us to make sure we're back at a major tournament."

A revival of monumental proportions is the only hope we have to see the hearts and minds of multiplied millions turn to God. If it is the only hope—then with God, it is inevitable. A Third Great Awakening is upon us. God is allowing things to boil, bringing things to the surface so that He can deal with them.

Football: Where next for Jose Mourinho as Real Madrid have an itch to scratch? China and France are options

(THE GUARDIAN) - Jose Mourinho still has a big reputation in China even if it is not as esteemed as it once was. However, the 55-year-old Portuguese manager in China would make for thrilling viewing.
Guangzhou Evergrande failed to make it eight out of eight Chinese Super League titles this year and Fabio Cannavaro has not been able to convince everyone at the club.
Mourinho has the stature to follow Marcello Lippi and Luiz Felipe Scolari at Guangzhou and the club have the money and ambition to be interested. Fans and the media would love his combative style, something that has not been seen in Asia before, although few think he would come so far east.
It would be a major surprise were Mourinho to get another job in England. For one thing, he might not want to - Manchester United seemed to be the only available position he felt like taking on after Chelsea - but more importantly after costly failure at Old Trafford there will be few major clubs willing to take the risk.
It is important to remember Mourinho was far from an automatic choice at United: there were plenty of influential voices with reservations and after two choppy campaigns gave way to the anticipated third-season syndrome the doubters will consider themselves vindicated.
It is possibly too soon to write Mourinho off, he could easily turn up somewhere and make the best of a fresh start and a clean slate, though in England the clean slate will always be a problem.
Let's face it, the man has not looked happy in his workplace for several years now.

Unless Marseille, with their size, history and fan base, receive heavy investment in the near future, the only potentially viable French Ligue 1 destination for Mourinho is Paris Saint-Germain.
Qatar Sports Investments has often courted Mourinho since acquiring the club and he told Telefoot in 2014 he was PSG's first choice over Carlo Ancelotti in 2011 before rejecting further Parisian advances when with Real Madrid.
Although Mourinho remains highly rated by the PSG hierarchy and despite flirtations last season when Mourinho referred to PSG's talent as special and magic, their interest has cooled a little of late.
Not least owing to an admiration of Thomas Tuchel's slow yet effective evolution of the club. Even if the German's reign were to deteriorate, it is likely Mourinho would have to wait until summer 2020 for a vacancy to appear, given the capital already accrued by the German.

As for the French national team, the FFF will stick with the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" adage for the foreseeable future. They are world champions after all.
In Germany, suggestions that Mourinho's free-agent status could have come at a handy time for Bayern Munich have not been slow to arrive in the conversation.
Bayern are adrift of the Bundesliga leaders, Borussia Dortmund, and with not only the manager, Niko Kovac, but major powerbrokers Uli Hoeness and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge under some pressure.
In terms of personality and profile, Mourinho clearly ticks a few boxes and Bayern's squad is stacked with the type of senior players he prefers working with.
Ideologically, however, it is not much of a fit. Mourinho's brand of football would be a tough sell to Hoeness and Rummenigge (not to mention the Allianz Arena public) at the best of times, let alone on his current run and with the team needing a jump-start.
He probably would not find a transfer budget to his liking, with the €43.5 million (S$67.9 million) spent on Corentin Tolisso from Lyon in 2017 still a club record, and the feeling is Bayern want to go bold and fresh next summer.
The most obvious landing spot for Mourinho in Italy would be with Inter: the team he led to the treble in 2010. Luciano Spalletti signed a new contract with the club at the start of this season but his failure to make it through to the Champions League knockout stage or mount a credible title challenge could provide a pretext for change.
The Nerazzurri recently hired the former Juventus CEO Beppe Marotta to shape their sporting strategy and he might also want to put his imprint on the club by naming the next manager.
Juventus themselves are happy with Massimiliano Allegri and would be unlikely to consider Mourinho in any case given the bad blood between them. Roma or Milan could conceivably have vacancies before the end of this season, but Mourinho might not be a popular choice with fans even if those clubs could find the resources to afford him.
There are only two Russian clubs who could realistically afford Mourinho: Zenit St Petersburg and Spartak Moscow.
But the Gazprom-owned Zenit have got a new manager, the fans' favourite Sergey Semak, who was appointed before the start of the season and Spartak sacked Massimo Carrera to appoint Oleg Kononov last month.
So it does not feel plausible to suggest that one of them would even consider talking to Mourinho at this stage. The other factor to take in is that the quality of the Russian league is not improving and not a single club has reached the knockout stage of the Champions League for the past three years.
Perhaps Mourinho would think the Russian league is not good enough for him.
As for the national team, Russia have just reached the World Cup quarter-finals and the Russian FA has obviously no plans to replace Stanislav Cherchesov, who costs them way less than Mourinho would, and who has already proved he can get a result with a team that cannot be described as one of the best in Russia's history.
Over in Spain, Mourinho's sacking will have caused a flash of emotion, a touch of excitement in Madrid. On the Real Madrid board there are still directors, the president included, who harbour the hope of bringing him back one day.
In moments of clarity, there is a recognition that to do so carries risks that are not advisable to take but there is a touch of forbidden fruit about him, the unrealisable dream. His name never entirely leaves their thoughts. His departure was bitter and unpleasant; his relationship with some in the dressing room broken.
Sergio Ramos, the Real captain, would not welcome him back. And yet that is one of the reasons why Florentino Perez finds the idea attractive: a part of him feels the tug of a purge. Another part wonders if it is really worth it. Not least because of the social impact, the possibility of reopening a divide.
Fans, too, are concerned at the consequences of a return: some fear his arrival, others are repelled by the idea. Yet there are others, a hard core, who would be delighted by it. Whether Mourinho would be is another matter. And if it is not Real, it cannot truly be anyone in Spain.

LONDON • Tottenham left it late again yesterday. Son Heung-min's second goal in four days since returning from the Asian Cup earned a 1-0 Premier League win over Newcastle that allowed Spurs to leapfrog Manchester City into second place.
Spurs also struck at the death to beat Fulham and Watford in recent weeks to ensure they have kept pace since Harry Kane and Dele Alli were injured.
Mauricio Pochettino's men are within four points of leaders Liverpool (61), who are in action at West Ham tomorrow, but just as significantly, they opened up a 10-point lead on Arsenal in the race for a top-four finish and Champions League football next season.
In keeping with a season of struggles, Tottenham were forced all the way by a dogged Newcastle, who were buoyed by a stunning 2-1 win over Manchester City in midweek.
Lucas Moura headed wide from point-blank range, Erik Lamela hit the woodwork and Christian Eriksen's flick was somehow hooked off the line by Fabian Schar - until Son settled it seven minutes from time.
"The two games were very important," said the South Korean, who scored the equaliser against Watford in midweek and compensated for Kane's absence with his ninth goal in 10 appearances and his 14th of the season.

"With six points we have had a great week. It was a difficult game, but we are happy to get the six points and we deserved this one."
He had a helping hand from Martin Dubravka, the goalkeeper who let the powerful effort slip under his grasp to undo all his side's good work in holding out for 83 minutes.
Newcastle's club record £20 million signing (S$35.5 million), playmaker Miguel Almiron, did not have international clearance to make his debut, so Rafael Benitez named the same side that started against City with the same game plan to defend deep and frustrate their opponents.
Fernando Llorente, the 33-year-old match winner against Watford, was benched after playing the full 90 minutes in Spurs' three previous games, leaving Moura to lead the line. But the Brazilian fluffed his lines, as did his teammates despite camping in the Newcastle half.
The hosts forced Dubravka into only one serious save before the break when former Magpies midfielder Moussa Sissoko turned a well-worked corner towards goal.
A similar pattern followed in the second half, but the visitors nearly caught Spurs cold with a flowing counter-attack when Salomon Rondon's powerful header from DeAndre Yedlin's cross came back off the post with Hugo Lloris stranded.
Lloris also had to make a flying save to turn a curling effort from Ayoze Perez behind.
But Spurs laid siege to Newcastle's wall of 10 men and had their reward. Pochettino was delighted by the character of his side, who have bounced back after being knocked out of both domestic Cups.
Asked if he will be supporting Arsenal who travel to City today, he said: "No, no way!"
He also questioned why they are being asked to play their next league game against Leicester on Sunday in the week of their Champions League last-16 first-leg game at home to Borussia Dortmund, who play their fixture on the Saturday.
"Twenty-four hours can make a massive difference," he said.
"It is difficult to understand."

Football: Liverpool will drop points, insists Man City boss Pep Guardiola

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Pep Guardiola is convinced Premier League leaders Liverpool will drop points between now and the end of the season as the Manchester City boss prepares for Thursday's (Jan 3) huge title clash with the Reds.
Guardiola's City side have been unable to keep pace with unbeaten Liverpool despite their own blistering start and sit in third place, seven points behind Jurgen Klopp's outfit ahead of their crunch meeting at the Etihad Stadium.
Liverpool have dropped just six points so far this season and come into the match on a nine-match winning streak in the league, but Guardiola is confident they will make mistakes amid a heavy domestic and European schedule.
"We are there, still with a lot of games to go and I think everyone will lose points this season, even Liverpool, because there are a lot of competitions," he told reporters on Wednesday.
"They have been incredible ... scoring four or five goals in every game. They are solid behind and in front." Guardiola feels his own team deserve credit for amassing 47 points in 20 league matches and is certain they will get opportunities to apply pressure on Liverpool after Thursday's match.
"We have dropped off sometimes but that is normal. During the season, sometimes you forget what you have to do," added Guardiola.
"You have to remember those things, and come back, and we have done it exceptionally well."
Liverpool have not won the English league since 1990, two years before the creation of the Premier League, and Guardiola believes that will be significant motivation for Jurgen Klopp's side, similar to what drove his own side to win last season's title with a record 100 points.
"My feeling is last season it was a little bit easier to maintain that hunger because 80 per cent of the players had not won anything in their lives.
"So I can feel what they feel, the Liverpool players. After 29 years not winning the title, to be there to win the Premier League, I understand it."
Guardiola also claimed that Liverpool's illustrious history, which includes 18 English league titles and has seen them crowned champions of Europe five times, will push Klopp's squad to match those achievements.
"When I was a little boy, I looked at the Premier League from Catalonia, from outside, and it was always two or three teams, and Manchester City were not there," he said.
"In the past decade our club has been incredible. Every time here in the past six or seven years, we have qualified for the Champions League.
"History is not 10 years, it's much more, it's longer, Anfield is Anfield, Old Trafford is Old Trafford, and the history is there and the Champions League titles are there. The players, when they put the shirt on, they know what they have to defend.
"Maybe in the next decade, the players will feel it when they come here. Our target is there now. It's to go higher and then higher than that - and that is what I want to maintain."

LONDON (AFP) - Huddersfield Town have condemned the racist abuse of midfielder Philip Billing, with the English Premier League strugglers saying they have reported the incident to the police.
The 22-year-old received online racial abuse late on Tuesday (March 12) from someone claiming to be one of the Yorkshire club's fans.
"We're aware of the racist message sent to Philip Billing over social media on Tuesday evening and have subsequently referred the case to West Yorkshire Police," said a Huddersfield statement issued on Wednesday.
"Huddersfield Town does not tolerate abuse of any kind and has a zero-tolerance stance towards any form of discrimination.
"We will give our full cooperation to the police to deal with this matter in the strongest possible way."
Denmark Under-21 international Billing responded by retweeting the message from the fan with a thumbs down emoji.
The midfielder has been one of the Terriers' better players this season but went off at half-time during last Saturday's home defeat by Bournemouth, amid speculation linking him with a move to another Premier League club at the end of the season.
The midfielder has produced several outstanding displays for the Terriers this season.
Town manager Jan Siewert said after the match he was unsure whether Billing was carrying an injury or not.
Saturday's loss saw bottom-of-the-table Huddersfield slump to a 15th defeat in 17 league games and they are 16 points from safety with eight matches remaining.

Football: Brighton edge into FA Cup quarter-finals

LONDON (AFP) - Brighton moved into the FA Cup quarter-finals for the second successive season as goals from Anthony Knockaert and Jurgen Locadia clinched a 2-1 win over Derby on Saturday (Feb 16).
Chris Hughton's side have been sucked into relegation danger in the Premier League after six games without a win.
But the Seagulls made the most of a welcome break from the grind of the relegation battle as they saw off Frank Lampard's Championship side at the Amex Stadium.
Derby had claimed the scalps of Manchester United and Southampton in domestic cup competitions this season.
But the fifth round tie was tipped in Brighton's favour by a dominant first-half display.
Brighton opened the scoring after 33 minutes when Knockaert bent his first-time shot into the bottom corner of Kelle Roos' net after connecting with Yves Bissouma's cross.
Hughton's team doubled their advantage when Locadia fired home from close range in first-half stoppage time after Bissouma's effort hit the post.
Former Chelsea and Arsenal star Ashley Cole set up a tense finish when the Derby defender headed in after 81 minutes.
It was the 38-year-old's first goal in England since 2012 and his first ever in the FA Cup and the landmark strike came in his second game since joining Derby until the end of the season following his release by LA Galaxy.
But, despite Derby's barrage of pressure, Cole's goal wasn't enough to spark a late escape for the Rams.
Championship strugglers Millwall are also through to the quarter-finals after a 1-0 win at AFC Wimbledon.
AFC Wimbledon, currently bottom of League One, enjoyed a memorable win over West Ham in the fourth round.
But Neil Harris' side avoided becoming their latest upset victims as the Lions made it to the last eight for the second time in three years.
AFC Wimbledon's Joe Pigott hit the post from close range in the opening moments and Millwall made the most of that let-off to take the lead in the fifth minute.
Ryan Leonard made a barnstorming run down the right and whipped over a teasing cross that Scottish defender Murray Wallace converted with a powerful header at the far post.
Wallace also scored Millwall's last-gasp winner against Everton when the 2004 FA Cup finalists' came from behind for a shock fourth round victory.
Later on Saturday, Premier League leaders Manchester City travel to fourth tier minnows Newport County.
