Pogba set to torment Gunners once again
Manchester United may have won in Paris without their most famous Parisian, but capital occasions seem to bring the best out of their most expensive player.
They have a 100 per cent record in London in 2019. Paul Pogba has three goals and three assists in what seems like United's second home.
Their most famous player returns after suspension and a famous result, ready to take his place in the makeshift midfield of rookies and a supposed misfit, in Fred.
Yet the same may have been said of Pogba three months ago. Confined to a bit-part role at the end of Jose Mourinho's reign, he is now an indictment of the sacked Portuguese.
Under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, he has looked a World Cup winner and an £89 million (S$156 million) player. He has been ubiquitous, shedding his status as an enigma to deliver consistency and productivity.
Even while missing a penalty and picking up a red card, he has scored nine times and registered seven assists. Pogba has provided 16 goals in 15 games.
More, really. When United won at the Emirates Stadium in the FA Cup in January, Anthony Martial completed the scoring when Petr Cech had parried Pogba's shot.
The Frenchman had intercepted in his own half and powered forward: it showcased the verticality and directness that suits Pogba, but also the counter-attacking game plan United's last two managers have used in 3-1 wins at Arsenal.
They have had wildly different endings for Pogba. The 25-year-old also set up United's third goal, scored by Jesse Lingard, during an influential display in 2017 but was then sent off for a studs-up challenge on Hector Bellerin.
He has hugged the spotlight in home games against the Gunners, too: last season, he opened the scoring in Arsene Wenger's final encounter with United.
In November, a 15-minute cameo in a 2-2 draw proved his final league appearance under Mourinho; he was sent on for Marouane Fellaini and left unused in the Portuguese's final two domestic fixtures.
"I was in the shadows," Pogba said in January. His relationship with Mourinho broke down.
In contrast, Solskjaer has embraced his exuberance and encouraged a larger-than-life character.
In August, when few thought he could become United manager, Solskjaer had said he would build a team around Pogba. Given the opportunity, he has been true to his word.
He has given him defensive cover, finding his best role either in a trio or on the left of a diamond, but allowed him to surge forward.
He has been allowed to try the audacious. He is having more shots - 48 during Solskjaer's reign - but has actually showed positional discipline and greater productivity while looking liberated.
The unlikely lads showed in Paris that Pogba certainly isn't a one-man midfield, but a talisman still feels much more than just one man.

Football: History made as women to referee men's AFC Cup clash between Yangon United and Naga World
KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) - The Asian Football Confederation announced Tuesday (May 14) that for the first time an all-female referee team will take charge of a men's continental club cup clash.
Japanese referee Yoshimi Yamashita and assistants Makoto Bozono and Naomi Teshirogi will officiate the AFC Cup match between Myanmar's Yangon United and Cambodia's Naga World at the Thuwunna Stadium on Wednesday.
"This will be the first time three female referees preside in the Asian Football Confederation's club competitions, marking a new milestone in Asian refereeing," the AFC said in a statement.
The AFC Cup is the second-string Asian club competition, a rung below the AFC Champions League.
Women officials have only previously been employed as assistant referees in AFC Cup matches, with Australians Sarah Ho and Alysson Flynn becoming the first in 2014.
"This is one of my dreams," said the experienced Yamashita, who officiated in the 2016 and 2018 Fifa U-17 Women's World Cup and 2018 Women's Asian Cup.
"We've worked very hard and this is the result."
Â
Assistant referee Teshirogi said her appointment will inspire female referees in Asia while Bozono said the experience will help in her preparations for the FIFA Women's World Cup in June, where the trio will be among 12 officials from the AFC.
"It is exciting to work with Yoshimi and Naomi. They are very experienced and have been very supportive. I will learn a lot from them," Bozono said.

Football: 'I think it's a goodbye', says Chelsea's Hazard
BAKU (AFP) - Chelsea forward Eden Hazard said he expects Wednesday's (May 29) 4-1 victory over Arsenal in the Europa League final to be his last game for the club.
"I think it's a goodbye, but in football you never know. My dream was to play in the Premier League and I did this for seven years for one of the biggest clubs in the world. So now maybe it's time for a new challenge," Hazard told BT Sport after the game.
Hazard, who scored twice in the final in Baku, has been heavily linked with a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid and said he had already made up his mind about his future.
"I've taken my decision already. Now it depends on the club. I'm just waiting like the fans wait, so you will know in a couple of days," he added.
"My target today was to win the trophy that's it, that's the only thing that was on my mind."

Football: Japan's golden oldie 'King Kazu' Miura renews J-League contract before 52nd birthday
TOKYO (AFP) - Former Japan striker Kazuyoshi Miura, who turns 52 next month, has extended his record as the J-League's oldest player after renewing his contract with Yokohama FC, the club said.
The veteran footballer, admiringly nicknamed "King Kazu" for his spirited on-field style, will kick off his 34th career season this year, the second division club announced on Friday (Jan 11).
"I thank fans for supporting me all the time," Miura said in a brief statement.
"I want to work out at full stretch every day... and play as many games as possible by making every minute count."
In 2017, Miura surpassed football's previous professional longevity record and became the oldest player to score a competitive goal in a professional match. Both records were previously held by English legend Stanley Matthews.
Last year he played nine games for Yokohama but failed to score.
Miura left Japan for Brazil in 1982 and signed a contract with Santos FC in 1986 to make his professional debut.
He made his Japan debut in 1990 and pushed for the country's first ever World Cup appearance in 1998 but failed to join the final squad for France despite scoring 55 goals in 89 games for the national side.
He was one of the stars of the professional J-League at its 1993 launch before joining Italy's Genoa on loan the following year.
Miura, who has played for Yokohama since 2005, has said he wants to play on until he turns 60.

Guardiola sorry City awarded 'offside' goal
LONDON • Pep Guardiola was apologetic after Manchester City were given a helping hand on their way to a 3-1 home victory over Watford, but insisted his side were deserving of the win that ensured they remained top of the Premier League table.
City were labouring to break down their opponents' massed ranks, until Raheem Sterling's controversial 46th-minute opener on Saturday changed everything.
The forward was initially flagged for offside as his effort looped over goalkeeper Ben Foster, but the decision was overturned by referee Paul Tierney following a close discussion with his assistant referee.
While Sterling was in an offside position as he latched onto Sergio Aguero's layoff, it was deemed the ball was kicked to him by Watford defender Daryl Janmaat.
His interference was enough to convince Tierney that the England international, who went on to complete his hat-trick before substitute Gerard Deulofeu scored a consolation goal, should be ruled onside. But Guardiola admitted post-game he was "sorry" the balance of the game hinged on that decision.
He also backed the introduction of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in the league next season despite complaints over its use in the Champions League last week and felt Sterling could "have done better" despite taking his tally to 18 goals in all competitions this term.
The City manager said: "There should be an easy solution and, next season... with VAR, that will not be a problem - it will be fairer.
"At the beginning of the season, Manchester City voted to install VAR. Some clubs didn't accept it. Hopefully next season, like in other countries in Europe, we can install it. I apologise to Javi (Gracia) and to Watford if the first goal is offside, but we were incredible.
"We made an incredible game, we played well in the first-half and they had only one shot on target - their goal - against us.
"The three goals (by Sterling) were fantastic but... he didn't help us a lot defensively in the first half and he gave the ball away a lot."
His opposite number Gracia was angered by the call, which basically altered the course of the game.
"Today, in my opinion, it is clear," the Watford boss said. "At the moment Aguero touched the ball, Sterling is in an offside position, a clear offside position, maybe (by) two metres. After that, he is in an offside position and he has influence as well because he goes to the ball.
"It is true the defender touches the ball, but he touches it because Sterling is close to him and is going to press him."

LIVERPOOL (REUTERS) - Liverpool will be without forwards Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino when they face Barcelona in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final as they look to overturn a 3-0 deficit, manager Jurgen Klopp said on Monday (May 6).
Egypt international Salah was carried off the pitch with a head injury in Saturday's 3-2 Premier League win at Newcastle United and has not recovered for the game against Barca at Anfield on Tuesday.
Brazilian Firmino has a muscular injury and was not included in the squad for Saturday's game at St James' Park.
"They both are not available for tomorrow," Klopp told a news conference.
"Two of the world's best strikers are not available and we have to score four goals to go through in 90 minutes.
"It doesn't make life easier but as long as we have 11 players on the pitch we will try... if we can do it wonderful and if not, fail in the most beautiful way."
Salah is expected to feature against Wolverhampton Wanderers in Liverpool's final Premier League game of the season on Sunday but Klopp said the clash with Barcelona was too soon for the 26-year-old.
"It's a concussion for Mo. He would not be allowed to play. He feels Ok but it's not good enough from a medical point of view. He's desperate but we cannot do it," Klopp added.
"Together with our supporters this was a long season and there's a little chance to make it even longer. If not, these are the last two home games of an incredible season.
"We should celebrate it with a good performance on the pitch and in the stands."
Defender Trent Alexander-Arnold said Liverpool would have to be fearless to have a chance of progressing.
"That's the only way we're going to get a result. If we get caught up in fearing their players then that's not really going to work," Alexander-Arnold added.
"We have had decent results this season where we have scored more than three goals and being at home helps us. There's still that sense of belief but we know it's going to be hard. But anything is possible, especially at Anfield."

Football: Zaha earns Palace a point at home to West Ham
LONDON (REUTERS) - Wilfried Zaha's deflected goal earned Crystal Palace a 1-1 draw at home to fellow Londoners West Ham United in the Premier League on Saturday (Feb 9).
It had looked as though Mark Noble's 27th-minute penalty and Palace's profligacy in front of goal would condemn Palace to a damaging loss in their bid to climb away from the relegation dogfight.
But Zaha eventually beat West Ham's keeper Lucasz Fabianski with a shot that looped up off the boot of Issa Diop.
West Ham had been the better side before the break with Noble calmly putting them ahead from the spot after Palace keeper Vincente Guita hauled down Michail Antonio.
Palace, who began the day four points and four places above the bottom three, were much improved in the second half and created numerous chances to equalise.
Substitute Michy Batshuayi should have scored before James McArthur struck the post with only Fabianski to beat.
Zaha's persistence paid off in the 76th minute and he could have won it for Palace late on.
"I am frustrated as it was such a good performance. The first half I thought was even, but in the second half it was pretty much one-way traffic," manager Roy Hodgson said.
"We had to work hard for our equaliser, we had 17 attempts in the second half, we swarmed around the goal but we found Fabianski in very good form."
Palace actually ended the day one point closer to the drop zone.
"I'm not concerned about what is going on below us, if we keep doing our bit and with performances like today we will get points off our own backs," Hodgson said.
"We know we are good enough to stay out of it."
The draw left Palace with 27 points from 26 games, three points above the relegation zone while West Ham, in 10th place, have now gone five games without a win all competitions.
West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini thought a draw was a fair result.
"They were a bit lucky with the goal but they had other chances so the draw was the logical result," he said.

Lawyers drop Neymar rape case
Lawyers drop Neymar rape case
SAO PAULO • Lawyers for a woman who accused Brazil footballer Neymar of rape are no longer representing her because of contradictions in her story, broadcaster Globo TV reported on Monday.
They claimed the woman initially told them she had consensual sex with Neymar, the world's most expensive player at €222 million (S$341.6 million), in a Paris hotel in May, and that he then became violent and assaulted her.
But the Sao Paulo-based firm, Fernandes e Abreu, said that in the official complaint she gave to Brazilian police, she "described what had happened as 'rape', which is a completely different allegation".
Neymar posted a video on his Instagram page on Saturday vehemently denying he had raped the woman, with his father also claiming the Paris Saint-Germain player is the victim of a blackmail attempt.
In the seven-minute video, he showed a string of racy WhatsApp messages with his accuser.
Rio police on Sunday said they had launched an investigation into the publication of intimate information on social media concerning the woman as her name was briefly visible in the now-deleted video.
According to British tabloid The Sun, she works as a photographer and has a five-year-old son.
The 27-year-old Neymar is now with the Brazil team preparing for the June 14-July 7 Copa America on home soil, and national coach Tite insisted on Monday that he "would not" judge the "indispensable" player.
He said: "I understand the seriousness of the issue. But there must be time for people to be able weigh the facts. I'm not going to let myself judge the facts.
"In the three years I have been dealing with Neymar, all the personal issues we have dealt with have been fair and truthful. He is an extraordinary player."
Neymar, who has been replaced as Brazil captain by Dani Alves for the Copa, has reportedly been summoned to appear before investigators in Rio de Janeiro on Friday.
But as he is set to be in the city of Porto Alegre that day to prepare for Sunday's friendly against Honduras, the Globo Esporte website has suggested that he could give evidence the following day before returning to Sao Paulo, where the team are based.

Saints fans face ban over Sala taunts
LONDON • Southampton have promised to ban supporters who mocked the death of Emiliano Sala by making aeroplane gestures during their 2-1 Premier League home loss to Cardiff on Saturday.
The game was Cardiff's first since the Argentinian striker's body was identified by an English coroner on Thursday, a day after it was recovered from underwater wreckage in the English Channel.
After the game at the St Mary's Stadium, a video on social media appeared to show two men in the home section making aeroplane gestures in the direction of the away fans.
Southampton confirmed both fans had been spoken to by police and intended to take "an extremely firm stance" over the incident.
The club added in a statement: "Such behaviour has no place in our game and will not be tolerated at St Mary's. The club will be taking an extremely firm stance against anyone involved and intends to ban those supporters identified."
Cardiff had been given permission to wear shirts embroidered with a yellow daffodil, the national emblem of Wales and the team colour of Nantes. And a minute's silence in memory of Sala was impeccably observed before an emotional match for the Welsh club.
The plane carrying Sala from the French city of Nantes to Cardiff, his new club, disappeared near the British island of Guernsey on Jan 21.
Captain Sol Bamba dedicated his goal and the victory to Sala.
He said: "A lot of things were going through my mind.
"I knew Emiliano. I know he was looking up there. The victory and the goal is for him."
The Ivorian defender scored the 69th-minute opener only for the hosts to equalise in stoppage time. But Kenneth Zohore netted a 93rd-minute winner that took Cardiff out of the relegation zone.
"It has been a tough couple of weeks," Bamba told Sky Sports. "We knew we had to give our all today. It wasn't easy but a performance like this was very pleasing."
Cardiff boss Neil Warnock was proud of his side's resilience as he paid his own post-match tribute.
He said: "Emiliano was a fabulous lad, and it's appropriate we came down with our black armbands on and put in a performance like that.
"We could easily have folded, but we were determined.
"We're limited, but you can't question their character and what they've got under their shirts because they've bags of heart."
Pilot David Ibbotson is still missing and the family's crowdfunding effort was boosted by the €27,000 (S$41,500) from French World Cup winner Kylian Mbappe, who pledged the same amount to the Sala search.

Game of many returns for Gunners
Game of many returns for Gunners
LONDON • Arsenal manager Unai Emery will face a familiar foe when the Gunners look to move a step closer to Europa League glory at Rennes today.
French midfielder Hatem Ben Arfa endured an unhappy two years under Emery at Paris Saint-Germain where he was frozen out for an entire season and made to train with the club's reserves.
However, his mercurial talent has now helped Ligue 1 side Rennes reach the last 16 of an European competition for the first time.
At 31, Ben Arfa has relaunched his career in the more modest surroundings of Roazhon Park and will aim to inflict revenge upon Emery today.
Rennes may lie 10th in Ligue 1, but shocked a highly fancied Real Betis in the last 32 with a thrilling 6-4 aggregate win.
"We know it'll be a level up against such a club," said Rennes midfielder Benjamin Andre.
"Arsenal is a name that resonates throughout Europe. They will obviously be the big favourites."
Â
Â
Â
Arsenal's struggles on the road in Emery's first season in charge should give the French side reason to believe. The Gunners have won just once away from home since November, suffering an embarrassing 1-0 defeat by Bate Borisov in the last 32 before turning the tie around at the Emirates.
Â
French international Alexandre Lacazette will miss out on a return to his homeland as he is suspended, but there will be a homecoming of another sort for Petr Cech, who spent two years at Rennes before joining Chelsea in 2004.
The Blues, meanwhile, are aiming to win the competition for a second time in six years starting against Dynamo Kiev at Stamford Bridge, with Maurizio Sarri having seemingly bounced back from the brink of losing his job.
London derby victories over Tottenham and Fulham have given the Italian breathing space after a 6-0 Premier League thrashing by Manchester City and then seeing his authority questioned by goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga's refusal to be substituted in the League Cup final.
Sarri's fate, though, will likely depend on sealing a return to Champions League football next season and winning the Europa League may yet prove the best means to that end with Tottenham, Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea fighting for the final two places in the Premier League's top four.
Off the pitch, Fifa confirmed on Tuesday that Chelsea have appealed against a transfer ban imposed after they were found guilty of breaching rules on recruiting 29 foreign players under the age of 18.
The Blues, banned from the next two transfer windows and also fined 600,000 Swiss francs (S$810,850), had already said they would appeal against the decision taken by Fifa's disciplinary committee last month.
Fifa said in a statement that it could neither offer a schedule for the process, nor whether the ban would be lifted pending the hearing.

Football: Gonzalo Higuain set to reunite with Maurizio Sarri
LONDON • Chelsea have agreed a deal to sign striker Gonzalo Higuain on loan from Juventus until the end of the season, according to reports in the British media.
The Argentina international joined the Italian champions in 2016 but was loaned to AC Milan at the start of the current season in which he has scored eight goals in 22 appearances so far.
The Guardian reported yesterday that the Blues will sign the 31-year-old on loan until the end of the campaign, with an option to make that move permanent on a further 12-month deal.
Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri is keen to strengthen his options in attack with Spain forward Alvaro Morata misfiring and having been forced to deploy playmaker Eden Hazard as a "false nine" in recent games.
Sarri worked with Higuain when he was manager at Napoli and it was under the Italian that the striker scored 36 goals to equal the Serie A record for most goals in a season in 2015-16.
He was then sold to Juve for £79.8 million (S$139.5 million), only to be squeezed out by Cristiano Ronaldo's arrival this season.
Sky Sports also reported that the loan deal could be extended for another year subject to "certain conditions".
Higuain's arrival could see Chelsea sanction a loan move for Morata, who is in talks with Atletico Madrid about a return to Spain's LaLiga.
The Spanish striker, who moved to Stamford Bridge in July 2017 for an initial £58 million, is expected to re-join the club where he began his career as a youth player.
Chelsea are also in talks with Monaco over the sale of Michy Batshuayi, for whom they are attempting to recoup as much as £40 million. The Belgium striker is keen on a return to the south of France, where he played previously with Marseille.

Unsung hero Henderson on fire after being unshackled
LONDON • Jordan Henderson has emerged as the unexpected driving force in Liverpool's midfield after persuading Jurgen Klopp to grant him the freedom to roam.
The Englishman has spent most of his career as an unsung support act for more glamorous team-mates with Liverpool and England.
But the 28-year-old has won Klopp's trust so completely that he goes into today's Champions League quarter-final second leg at Porto firmly established as one of the key components of Liverpool's push for a European Cup and Premier League double.
Ever since joining Liverpool from Sunderland in 2011, Henderson had struggled to silence the critics.
Former Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson once wrote in his autobiography that he opted not to sign Henderson because of the way he ran.
"We looked at Jordan Henderson a lot, but we noticed that he runs from his knees, with a straight back," Ferguson said.
"The modern footballer runs from his hips, and we thought this gait might cause him problems later in his career."
But the level-headed Henderson refused to be beaten down by Ferguson and others who wrote him off.
Impressing Klopp with his tactical discipline and relentless work ethic, Henderson has improved significantly since the German took charge at Anfield in 2015, earning the captain's armband.
But even with his place in Klopp's plans secure as a reliable defensive midfielder, Henderson remained restless for a bigger role in the team's attacking scheme.
Offered the chance to play in an advanced midfield berth during England's recent Euro 2020 qualifiers against the Czech Republic and Montenegro, Henderson showcased his versatility with two terrific performances.
Emboldened by those displays, Henderson made a beeline for Klopp's office on his return to Liverpool's Melwood training ground and made his case to be used in the same role with the Reds.
Intriguingly, Klopp decided to bow to Henderson's request and the results have been a revelation.
He scored his first goal in 18 months in Liverpool's 3-1 win at Southampton on April 6, delivered a dynamic show in the 2-0 Champions League first-leg victory over Porto three days layer and then set up Sadio Mane's opener in Sunday's 2-0 success against Chelsea.
"From now on, all the time when players come into my office and ask for a different position, I will play them. It's brilliant," Klopp joked. "Actually we had that talk. He played the other positions when we had a need and played them really well.
"For the game against Porto, wow. So no problem. That is my job, to play the players in their strongest position.
"In the last three games he's obviously on fire."
Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah believes Henderson's switch to a more attacking position has benefited the rest of the side.
"Hendo did a great job and it makes it easier for me. I think we do a good job together," he said.

WATFORD, England (REUTERS) - Substitute Andre Gray scored a second-half winner as Watford beat Marco Silva's Everton 1-0 in the Premier League on Saturday (Feb 9) to heap the pressure on their former manager.
Everton boss Silva's first visit to Vicarage Road since being sacked by Watford last January ended with the home fans singing that he would suffer a similar fate at the Merseyside club after a run of three defeats in a stuttering campaign.
Forward Gray, who came on for midfielder Ken Sema after the break, latched on to Will Hughes's cross from the right following a delicate layoff from Craig Cathcart to tap the ball into the net on 65 minutes.
Gray said Watford were desperate to ensure that Silva, who left Watford after a poor run of results following Everton's initial approach, did not leave with three points.
"With the ex-manager here there was extra spice in the game, especially with the fans, it pushes you on," the 27-year-old, who scored his fourth league goal of the season, said.
"In the second half we had that edge. We didn't play well but we got over the line. Regardless of the edge of the match, we'd have gone for it because we were desperate for the win."
Stunned by the goal, Everton struggled to create clear chances in the second half of a scrappy game as Watford held firm to secure the victory and move up to 37 points.
Watford had nearly gone ahead in the 11th minute after Troy Deeney chested a hopeful cross into the path of Etienne Capoue, whose rising volley from point blank range glanced off goalkeeper Jordan Pickford's head and over the crossbar.
Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster saved Cenk Tosun's stinging shot from distance in the 34th minute before Gylfi Sigurdsson's lobbed effort came off the crossbar in the second half on a frustrating afternoon for the visitors.
Everton's day got worse when Kurt Zouma was sent off for confronting the referee after the final whistle and the French defender will miss their next match at Cardiff City.
Skipper Tom Davies said Everton, who have collected 11 points from their last 14 games, were not up to the mark.
"We underperformed again today, we had enough chances," the 20-year-old midfielder added.
"We're not happy and we have to look back on this match to see what we need to change."

Football: Spurs stunned by Palace as FA Cup holders Chelsea ease past Wednesday
Football: Spurs stunned by Palace as FA Cup holders Chelsea ease past Wednesday
LONDON (AFP) – Tottenham Hotspur suffered their second defeat in English knockout football in a matter of days as they lost 2-0 to Crystal Palace in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Sunday (Jan 27).Â
Connor Wickham gave the unfancied Eagles, 29 points adrift of Spurs in the Premier League, a ninth-minute lead before a penalty by former Tottenham winger Andros Townsend made it 2-0.Â
Spurs’ Kieran Trippier missed with a penalty before half-time as Tottenham suffered more spot-kick woe following Thursday’s shoot-out defeat by Chelsea, another of their London rivals, in a League Cup semi-final.Â
FA Cup-holders Chelsea had no such problems later on Sunday as they marked Argentina striker Gonzalo Higuain’s club debut with a 3-0 win at home to Championship side Sheffield Wednesday. Willian scored twice either side of a goal from highly-rated English teenager Callum Hudson-Odoi, linked with a transfer window move to German giants Bayern Munich.Â
There was no goal for Higuain, signed on loan until the end of the season from Juventus on Wednesday. But Gianfranco Zola, Chelsea’s assistant manager and himself a former Blues striker, told the BBC: “We are pleased with Gonzalo Higuain’s performance, he was trying to find the space and get on the ball.Â
“It wasn’t easy as they had a lot of players round him.â€
Earlier, Tottenham’s reverse left Mauricio Pochettino still searching for his first trophy as their manager since the Argentinian joined from Southampton in 2014, with Spurs’ last piece of silverware the 2008 League Cup.Â
Spurs were without injured England stars Harry Kane and Dele Alli, while the in-form Son Heung-Min had still to return from international duty with South Korea at the Asia Cup.Â
Pochettino, however, decided to omit Christian Eriksen, with the influential playmaker not even among Spurs’ substitutes at Selhurst Park. For all they are third in the Premier League, Spurs are nine points adrift of leaders Liverpool.Â
The Champions League is now Tottenham’s only realistic hope of a trophy this season, with Pochettino’s men playing Borussia Dortmund in the last 16. “It was so painful to lose the game like this,†Pochettino told BT Sport.Â
“We have to look forward to the Premier League and Champions League. We cannot complain and just try in the two competitions to give our best.â€
It took Palace a mere nine minutes to open the scoring, Wickham following up after a Jeff Schlupp shot was blocked by Spurs goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga. Palace doubled their lead when Townsend slammed a home a penalty after Spurs’ Kyle Walker-Peters handled a cross into the box.Â
But at the other end, after Patrick van Aanholt brought down Juan Foyth, Trippier blasted a penalty well wide of the post. Â
Chelsea did not have things all their own way against second-tier Wednesday, who thought they had been awarded a penalty in the 22nd minute. Joey Pelupessy tried to meet Steven Fletcher’s pass, with Ethan Ampadu sliding in to win the ball before being kicked by the Wednesday midfielder.Â
Referee Andre Marriner awarded a penalty but this was overturned by VAR, being trialled in some English cup fixtures this season.Â
“It’s crazy,†said Owls’ caretaker boss Steve Agnew, holding the fort ahead of Steve Bruce’s imminent arrival. “Obviously the VAR decisions are correct but what baffled me was surely it’s a corner if it came off their player. The referee gave a drop ball. And a minute later they have a penalty.â€
Wednesday’s woe was compounded soon afterwards when Willian scored from the spot after Sam Hutchinson trod on Cesar Azpilicueta inside the box. VAR was called into action again but this time Marriner’s decision was upheld and Willian, after appearing to offer the spot-kick to Higuain, made no mistake. Â
Chelsea had to wait until midway through the second half for Hudson-Odoi to make it 2-0 before Willian, playing a neat one-two with Olivier Giroud, completed the scoring seven minutes from time.

‘So painful’

Football: Klopp confirms Firmino fitness for Champions League final
MADRID (AFP) - Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino is fit for Saturday's Champions League final against Tottenham Hotspur despite missing the end of the Premier League season, manager Jurgen Klopp confirmed on Friday (May 31).
"From his point of view, yes, he is ready," Klopp said at a press conference in Madrid on Friday, just before his squad, with Firmino, trained on the pitch at the Metropolitano Stadium.
However, Klopp refused to say whether Firmino - who has been struggling with a groin problem - would start, joking that he would only do so if Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino revealed his line-up.
"If Poch afterwards says the exact line-up then call me, then you will know. If not, I thought I'd keep at least a few question marks open."
Klopp added: "He is fit, he has trained, you will see him later, he is here, and if nothing happens from the moment when he left the plane to now, then he should be fine."
The Brazilian did not feature in Liverpool's last three matches and before that only came on as a late substitute in their 3-0 victory over Barcelona in the first leg of the semi-final.

School Sports: Queensway overcome heavy traffic, early goal to beat Bowen 7-1 and retain B Div girls' football title
School Sports: Queensway overcome heavy traffic, early goal to beat Bowen 7-1 and retain B Div girls' football title
SINGAPORE - This was unfamiliar territory for Queensway Secondary School, defending champions and overwhelming favourites for the B Division girls football title.
Just six minutes of Friday's (April 12) final had elapsed and they were already a goal behind to Bowen Secondary School.
Not only did Queensway have five members in their starting XI who were national players - Bowen had none - but the 2015 champions had not conceded a goal during this season's competition. Through seven games and 490 minutes in the group stage and semi-final, their backline had not been breached.
Led by star midfielder Putri Nur Syaliza, Queensway recovered from that early setback and relied on their experience and quality as they thrashed their rivals 7-1 at Our Tampines Hub for a one-sided win.
Putri scored twice to bring her season tally to 27 goals - she was the tournament's top scorer - while striker Dorcas Chu finished her last B Division match with a hat trick.
Putri, 16, said: "We let in the goal because weren't warmed up properly and we weren't focused on the match yet. We arrived late because there was a traffic jam on the way here so we when we reached everything was rushed."
Bowen's striker Rachel Chan took advantage of that initial disorientation. She had found herself unmarked in the Queensway penalty area and calmly slotted the ball past goalkeeper Hazel Lim.
Their lead however, lasted only four minutes. Queensway were awarded a penalty after midfielder Atikah Ardini was fouled. She made no mistake with her spot-kick.
Thirteen minutes later, Putri dribbled into the Bowen penalty box and despite having three defenders closing her down, managed to score to give Queensway the lead.
On the stroke of half time, left winger Summer Chong scored Queensway's third to double their advantage. Goals from Dorcas and Putri in the second half completed the comfortable victory.
Dorcas was thrilled with her contribution and dedicated her opening goal to teammate Lim Yoke Peng, who missed the final due to injury.
The 16-year-old said: "I'm really happy that I scored three goals because it's my last year in this school so I'm glad I ended it with a bang."
Putri added that her team needed time to get comfortable on the field.
"We were very shaky initially but we slowly built up our confidence and started focusing on our tactics so that helped us to play better. "
The score may have been one-sided but Bowen's captain Eva Rushdina, 15, was nevertheless proud of the attitude shown by her teammates.
"During our training we would work on passing and building up the play. We managed to execute that during the final despite not really doing it in the previous matches," said the defender.
"We put in our hundred percent and if this is what the scoreline is then there's nothing much that we can do."
